Symbicort turbohalers are a prescription-only asthma treatment. For that reason, to ensure the safety of our patients and the legal operating of our pharmacy, we only supply a maximum of 2 inhalers at one time.

Symbicort turbohalers contain two active ingredients: a corticosteroid called budesonide and a beta-2 agonist called formoterol fumarate dihydrate.

The medicine also contains inactive ingredients that are used to make up the inhalation – for more details please see the ‘Ingredients’ tab above.

This medicine works in two different ways.

The budesonide contained in the inhaler enters the lungs and restricts the body’s production of chemicals which cause inflammation. This eases your breathing problems and reduces your risk of an asthma attack.

Formoterol fumarate dihydrate causes muscles along the airway to relax and dilate. This relieves asthma symptoms and allows you to breathe more easily.

The long-acting relief from the formoterol fumarate dihydrate will take effect within a few days. The preventer effect from the budesonide may take up to two weeks to noticeably reduce inflammation, but this usually happens within a few days

Yes – although Symbicort provides some of the function of a reliever inhaler, this is a long-acting relief, which can take a few days to have an effect. You will still need to carry a blue reliever inhaler for quick-acting relief in emergency situations. However, you will likely need to use your relief inhaler less frequently if you are using Symbicort every day.
