Codeine Linctus is a cough suppressant used to calm dry, irritating coughs. Every 5ml of Codeine Linctus contains 15mg of Codeine Phosphate. This medicine is not suitable for productive or chesty coughs.

Coughing is the body’s way of reacting to an irritant/infection in the upper respiratory tract. In most cases, coughing is an automatic response, which the sufferer has little control over. If the problem persists, an unproductive cough can become both an annoyance and a practical hindrance.

Coughing is an essential mechanism, helping to clear the throat of dust, mucus and bacteria in the airways. However, in some cases, it can progress into a persistent and largely unnecessary issue. For some, it can even become debilitating. Furthermore, non-stop unproductive coughing can lead to aggravation or even damage to the already tender throat area.

The purchase of Codeine Linctus will first need to be approved by our pharmacist. Please note, if ‘Express Delivery’ is chosen, this will apply from the time the item is approved, not from when it was ordered. Approval usually occurs within 24 hours of placing your order.

Codeine Linctus’ active ingredient is an opiate commonly used as a pain reliever. When used in a dry cough syrup, Codeine Phosphate acts as an antitussive agent. This means it helps to reduce the body’s cough reflex in the central nervous system, as well as actively soothing the throat.

Adults over the age of 18 years can take one 5ml spoonful up to 4 four times daily when required to relieve a dry cough. A reduced dose is advised for elderly patients. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice.

Codeine Linctus can be taken either with or without food. Do not exceed the stated dose of this medicine. If your symptoms persist despite treatment, seek medical advice. Codeine Linctus should only be taken for the short-term. Regular use of this medicine can lead to addiction, which may result in you feeling restless and irritable if you cease taking it.

Not everyone will experience side effects from taking Codeine Linctus. However, if they do occur they can include:

  • Feeling nauseous
  • Feeling dizzy or vertigo
  • Loss of appetite
  • Constipation
  • Drowsiness

If you are concerned about any of these side effects, or if Codeine Linctus affects you in any other way, stop taking it and talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
