Diprobase Ointment is a protective ointment for hydrating and soothing the skin. Diprobase is an emollient and a moisturiser. Diprobase can be used by adults or children to treat skin that is dry or damaged, or red and inflamed. It can also be used to treat skin conditions such as eczema – when applied before having a bath, it will stop skin from drying out.
There are no particular active ingredients contained within Diprobase ointment. The ointment is a mixture of liquid paraffin and white soft paraffin, which form a greasy moisturiser. The ointment works by covering the skin with a layer of oil that stops water evaporating off of the skin.
The symptom of dry skin is a result of a low water content in the stratum corneum – the outer layer of the skin. This layer of skin can become cracked and lose flexibility when suffering from dehydration. Normally, the stratum corneum has substances inside it that prevent water from drifting deeper into other layers of skin. The stratum coreneum is also protected by a natural oil (sebum) on the surface, which reduces evaporation of water from the surface of the skin.
When too much water manages to evaporate off of the skin's surface, the skin gets dried out. This is more likely to happen as one ages. This effect is also worsened by frequent and intense washing, as soapy hot water reduce the layer of natural oil on surface of the skin. For any dry skin condition, such as eczema and dermatitis, a moisturiser can be used to help hydrate the skin. Moisturised skin will more easily stay smooth, soft and supple. For maximum effectiveness, moisturisers should be used frequently and before or after washing the skin. With certain skin conditions such as eczema, moisturisers can help prevent re occurrence of symptoms when continuously used after the skin quality has improved.
This ointment is only to be used externally on the skin.
When using this ointment before a bath or shower, be careful to avoid slipping as the ointment may make the surface of the bath or shower extra slippery.
Keep this product away from fire and potential fire sources, for example electric or gas stoves, fires, or lit cigarettes. The paraffin contained within this product is highly flammable and can make fabrics such as bed linen, towels, bandages, dressings, or clothing more flammable than usual. Whilst this ointment is in contact with any clothing, bandages or dressing, avoid smoking or exposure to naked flames. Any bedding or clothing that regularly comes into contact with the ointment should be changed and washed frequently, preferably every day. Take care to ensure that the ointment does not soak into any furniture as it will produce a fire hazard.
There are several skin preparations containing paraffin available:
Other ointments of white soft paraffin and liquid paraffin are available as generic products without a brand name.
Either the ointment or cream can be used, depending on personal preference. The cream should be easier to apply and will be absorbed quicker, making it more effective for treating a larger area. The greasier ointment will stay on the skin for longer and therefore may be more effective on particularly dry areas of skin.
This product is suitable for moderate or severe cases of eczema
This ointment will provide skin hydration that lasts for a long time

Ointments are generally unpopular as they are very greasy, so they sit on the skin for a long time providing a sticky feeling. However, they are generally less irritating on skin as they don't contain any preservative ingredients. Ointments are an occlusive solution, meaning they work by leaving an oily layer on the surface of the skin. This makes them very effective moisturisers even when drying after a shower, as the oil forms a protective layer that prevents water from leaving the surface of the skin.
Despite the fact that the ointment doesn't look good, it's best to apply the ointment generously before bed, and more sparingly in the daytime as it makes the face very greasy. It's a good idea to avoid contact with hair, as it will make hair very greasy too.
