Phenergan Elixir can be used to treat travel sickness, rashes, hay fever, and it can suppress insomnia. It's active ingredients have a sedative effect and will induce a feeling of relaxation.

Whether having problems sleeping or with travel sickness, Phenergan Elixir can provide relief. It can also act as a sedative or relaxant. This is a multi-purpose medicine that will undoubtedly come in useful.

The active ingredient in Phenergan Elixir is promethazine. This is a sedating antihistamine, meaning it stops histamine in the body from performing functions. Histamine is produced in the body and causes effects such as itching skin, nasal congestion or inflammation of airways in response to the presence of allergens. By blocking histamine from acting, these symptoms of an allergic reaction are suppressed.

Histamine can cause problematic reactions such as anaphylaxis, or more localised ones such as hay fever. Promethazine can be used to treat the symptoms of both.

Promethazine also reduces histamine activity in the vomiting centre of the brain. This area of the brain is in charge of the vomiting reflex and feelings of sickness. One trigger for vomiting that the vomiting centre is activated by is a nerve signal from the vestibular apparatus in the middle ear. When head movements, such as those experienced when travelling by car or boat, are detected in the vestibular apparatus, it can send signals to the vomiting centre that result in motion sickness. The symptoms of this include dizziness, vertigo, nausea, and vomiting. Promethazine blocks the histamine receptors in the vomiting centre, meaning such signals from the vestibular apparatus will not trigger these symptoms.

Promethazine is a sedating antihistamine, meaning it also causes drowsiness. This sedating effect is used before minor surgeries. It can also be useful to provide relief for people suffering from sleeping difficulties such as insomnia.

Phenergan Elixir is an orange flavoured and sugar free sedating antihistamine, providing relief from hay fever or rashes, and also aiding those experiencing sleeping difficulties.

  • What are Phenergan used for?

    • For the treatment of hives, hay fever, allergies and rashes.
  • How does Phenergan work?

Phenergan Tablets and Elixir contain the active ingredient, promethazine, a sedating antihistamine. It prevents the actions of histamine.

Histamine is a substance produced by the body as part of the immune system. It causes the symptoms of allergic reactions such as inflammation of the airways or skin, rashes, nasal congestion, and itching of the skin, eyes or nose. Promethazine prevents histamine from binding to its receptors in various parts of the body and this stops it from causing the symptoms of allergies.

Histamine can also cause more severe reactions such as anaphylaxis. Promethazine treats localised allergies such as hay fever and nettle rash, as well as anaphylaxis.

Promethazine also blocks histamine receptors in the brain in an area called the called the vomiting centre. The vomiting centre causes feelings of sickness and the vomiting reflex. It is activated when it receives nerve messages from the vestibular system in the middle ear about the body’s position.

When something disturbs the vestibular system, such as head movements when travelling by boat or car, nerve signals are sent from the middle ear to the vomiting centre. The effect can cause motion sickness symptoms. By blocking the histamine receptors in the brain’s vomiting centre, Promethazine prevents disturbances in the middle ear from activating the vomiting reflex, thus preventing motion sickness symptoms.

  • How do I take Phenergan?

Dosage and frequency will depend on the patient’s age and condition. Follow the instructions in the leaflet or packaging provided with this medication, or your doctor’s instructions.
