Phenergan tablets

Phenergan Tablets 25mg provide complete allergy relief. It offers symptomatic treatment for allergic conditions of the skin and upper respiratory tract. This includes allergic rhinitis, urticaria, and anaphylactic reactions. It also treats insomnia, rashes, pet allergies, and travel sickness. A versatile medication, Phenergan can be used by the whole family.

Both Phenergan tablets and the Phenergan Elixir contain the active ingredient Promethazine, a sedating antihistamine. It enters the brain in significant quantities and causes drowsiness. This effect can be used to produce sedation before minor procedures or surgery, and can also provide short-term help for people with sleeping difficulties.

As an antihistamine, Phenergan Tablets 25mg block the action of histamine. When the body comes into contact with allergens, it produces histamine as a defence. Histamine causes symptoms of an allergies such as sneezing, sore eyes, rashes, and nasal congestion. Promethazine blocks the histamine receptors in the brain, preventing them from receiving the messages that cause symptoms.

A tablet that provides relief from:

  • Hay fever, allergies and nettle rash.
  • Adult insomnia.
  • Pet allergies.
  • Travel sickness, nausea and vomiting.

Phenergan tablets are also used for sedation prior to surgery and short-term sedation for children.

Pharmacist Tip

Phenergan is a versatile medication that can treat allergic reactions, travel sickness and sleeping problems. It can cause drowsiness. If this occurs, avoid driving or operating machinery.

Promethazine is an antihistamine. It blocks the histamine that your body produces in response to contact with allergens. Its other effects (anti-nausea, pain relief, sedation) may be due to its effect on other natural substances and parts of the brain.

Cough-and-cold products can be unsafe for children younger than 6. Therefore, do not use Phenergan to treat cold symptoms in children under 6 unless directed by your doctor. To prevent serious side effects, follow all dosage directions. Do not take other cough-and-cold medications while taking Phenergan.

Treating motion sickness with Phenergan

Promethazine also eases nausea and vomiting associated with motion sickness caused by air, sea train or car travel. Motion sickness is caused by conflicting information being received by the brain from the eyes and the inner ear’s vestibular system. The ear’s messages suggest motion, while the eye’s messages suggest that the body is still. The conflicting information stimulates the brain to produce the vomiting reflex. Promethazine in Phenergan tablets 25mg binds to histamine receptors in the vestibular apparatus and to histamine receptors in the brain. This blocks the transmission of nerve impulses from the inner ear to the brain, preventing the vomiting reflex. Phenergan tablets 25mg also reduce nausea and vomiting due to other conditions including irradiation sickness, postoperative vomiting, and drug-induced nausea.

Phenergan for sedation

Promethazine in Phenergan tablets 25mg is an H1 receptor antagonist and binds to histamine receptors in various parts of the including the brain. Blocking these brain histamine receptors is responsible for causing sedation.

  • What is Phenergan?

Phenergan Tablets contain promethazine hydrochloride, a sedating anti-histamine. It blocks the histamine that the body produces during an allergic reaction.

  • What are Phenergan used for?

Phenergan Tablets and Elixir can be given to you by a doctor or pharmacist. Pharmacists provide Phenergan in the following situations:

    • For the treatment of hives, hay fever, allergies and rashes.
  • How does Phenergan work?

Phenergan Tablets and Elixir contain the active ingredient, promethazine, a sedating antihistamine. It prevents the actions of histamine.

Histamine is a substance produced by the body as part of the immune system. It causes the symptoms of allergic reactions such as inflammation of the airways or skin, rashes, nasal congestion, and itching of the skin, eyes or nose. Promethazine prevents histamine from binding to its receptors in various parts of the body and this stops it from causing the symptoms of allergies.

Histamine can also cause more severe reactions such as anaphylaxis. Promethazine treats localised allergies such as hay fever and nettle rash, as well as anaphylaxis.

Promethazine also blocks histamine receptors in the brain in an area called the called the vomiting centre. The vomiting centre causes feelings of sickness and the vomiting reflex. It is activated when it receives nerve messages from the vestibular system in the middle ear about the body’s position.

When something disturbs the vestibular system, such as head movements when travelling by boat or car, nerve signals are sent from the middle ear to the vomiting centre. The effect can cause motion sickness symptoms. By blocking the histamine receptors in the brain’s vomiting centre, Promethazine prevents disturbances in the middle ear from activating the vomiting reflex, thus preventing motion sickness symptoms.
