Bendroflumethiazide is a thiazide diuretic, a type of medicine more commonly known as ‘water tablets’. This 2.5mg daily tablet is a popular treatment for high blood pressure and fluid retention (oedema). As the name suggests, water tablets aid in the drainage of water from the blood and other parts of the body. This reduces pressure on the heart and treats other complications that can occur due to oedema.

Having high blood pressure can lead to serious health complications. The condition often goes undiagnosed due to its lack of visible symptoms. If left untreated, hypertension can lead to problems with the heart, kidneys, brain and other organs. Ignoring high blood pressure could ultimately result in heart disease, heart attacks, strokes, and kidney failure. If you are taking Bendroflumethiazide to treat hypertension, it will likely be a long-term prescription. In some cases, Bendroflumethiazide can be used at the same time as certain other hypertension medications.

Your lifestyle can play a big role in managing your hypertension. Making simple, healthy lifestyle changes can dramatically lower your blood pressure. In some instances, these changes will need to be supplemented with medication, such as Bendroflumethiazide. The most effective lifestyle changes that will reduce stress on your heart include; exercising regularly, eating a healthy balanced diet, reducing the amount of salt in your diet, smoking cessation, and cutting down on alcohol.

Oedema is characterised by a buildup of fluid under the skin. Common symptoms are swelling, aches, discolouration, weight loss or gain. Oedema can be caused by an underlying medical condition. This includes diseases of the kidneys, heart, thyroid or lungs, as well as pregnancy or malnutrition. A number of medications may also cause oedema, including corticosteroids, the contraceptive pill, and other hypertension treatments. Anyone can be affected by oedema, however, its incidence increases with age and it tends to more commonly affect women than men.

In some cases, the body will drain the excess fluid and treat oedema by itself. However, oedema can be extremely painful and increase blood pressure, so you may be prescribed a treatment, such as Bendroflumethiazide. Like hypertension, oedema can be controlled through certain lifestyle changes. Elevate your legs frequently, exercise regularly and reduce the sodium in your diet. If you are overweight, losing weight will reduce the stress on the body and allow it to more easily control fluid levels.

Water tablets, such as Bendroflumethiazide, work by increasing the efficiency of the kidneys. This removes the excess water from the blood and also dilates blood vessels. Each of these effects reduces the effort the heart requires, lowering blood pressure.

Swallow the tablet whole with a sip of water. Bendroflumethiazide can be taken with or without food. Water tablets can cause you to urinate – people therefore usually choose to take them in the morning, so that they are not kept awake at night.

If, for any reason, you forget to take a tablet, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is nearly time for your next tablet, skip the dose that you missed. Never double your dose to compensate for a dose that you have missed.

Not everyone will experience side effects when they take Bendroflumethiazide, however, if you do they can include:

Nausea, dizziness, digestive problems (including stomach pain, constipation or diarrhoea), loss of appetite, muscular weakness.

Bendroflumethiazide alters the makeup of your blood. See your doctor if you experience discolouration, bruising, nosebleeds, tiredness or other similar symptoms. They may advise that you take a blood test.

Bendroflumethiazide may at times draw too much water, leaving you dehydrated. Symptoms of this include dry mouth, dry skin and persistent thirst. Talk to your doctor if this occurs, as they may adjust your prescription.

If you are concerned about these effects, or if the product affects you in any other way, stop using it and talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

Bendroflumethiazide PhEur

  • How does Bendroflumethiazide work?

Diuretics such as Bendroflumethiazide work by increasing the efficiency of the kidneys.
