Enalapril is a daily treatment for high blood pressure (hypertension). It is an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor. It reduces the heart’s workload by widening blood vessels. Along with hypertension, Enalapril may be prescribed to treat heart failure, or to protect blood vessels from a recent heart attack. The tablets contain 20mg of Enalapril and are taken either once or twice per day.
Hypertension is a common problem, affecting 1 in every 4 adults in The UK. Many of those affected may not even be aware that they have the condition. This is because high blood pressure can go unnoticed, due to its lack of visible symptoms. It is recommended that adults over the age of 40, have their blood pressure checked at least once every 5 years. Ignoring hypertension will significantly increase the risk of developing heart disease, which can lead to a heart attack, stroke, or kidney failure. Congestive heart failure is also a risk, which can lead to several problems, including; excess fluid in the bloodstream. Enalapril is not able to cure hypertension or heart failure, however, it will help keep them under control.
Your blood pressure can be controlled more effectively by making some simple lifestyle changes alongside taking medication, such as Enalapril. Hypertension treatment should be used to help supplement a healthy diet and exercise. The most effective changes you can make to help reduce the strain on the heart include:
Enalapril is an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor. This means it blocks the action of ACE enzymes in the body. ACE enzymes regulate fluid in the bloodstream. They also cause the blood vessels to contract. Both of these actions lead to an increase in blood pressure. Enalapril inhibits the action of these enzymes, which has the effect of decreasing the total volume of fluid in the bloodstream, as well as widening the blood vessels. This has the effect of lowering blood pressure.
It is important that you continue taking Enalapril until your doctor advises that you stop, even if you feel healthy.
