Felodipine is a calcium channel blocker used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) and angina. It relaxes the blood vessels, decreasing the pressure on the heart. Felodipine is a daily modified-release tablet, meaning the medicine is released slowly throughout a period of 24 hours. Felodipine should begin to take effect within five hours.
Calcium channel blockers treat mild to moderate high blood pressure. Muscle cells require calcium to contract. Felodipine targets muscle cells on the walls of arteries throughout the body. It reduces their access to calcium, causing the muscles to relax. This slightly widens the arteries, making it much easier for the heart to circulate blood. As such, blood pressure goes down. Along with blood vessels, Felodipine also widens the arteries of the heart. This increases the heart’s oxygen supply, which reduces chest pain related to angina.
Hypertension is a common condition. It becomes more common as we increase in age. In many cases, the condition can go undiagnosed, as it does not usually show any noticeable symptoms. If left untreated, hypertension can potentially lead to complications with the heart, kidneys, brain and other vital organs. This increases the risk of suffering a heart attack, a stroke, or kidney failure. Felodipine isn’t able to cure hypertension or angina. However, it will help keep both conditions under control. It is important that you continue taking Felodipine until your doctor advises you to stop, even if you feel healthy.
Your blood pressure can be greatly influenced by lifestyle choices. Adopting a healthy lifestyle can significantly help to lower your blood pressure. In some cases, a healthy lifestyle may require supplementing with medication, such as felodipine. The most effective steps you can take to help lower your blood pressure include; regular exercise, a low-fat diet, reducing your intake of salt, smoking cessation, and reducing your consumption of alcohol.
You can also take a tablet that combines Felodipine with Ramipril, another hypertension medicine. Felodipine may also be prescribed alongside other hypertension medicines including beta-blockers or diuretics
