Losartan is a daily treatment for high blood pressure (hypertension). It is an Angiotensin-II receptor blocker (ARB). It reduces the heart’s workload by widening blood vessels. Along with hypertension, Losartan may be prescribed to treat heart failure, or to protect blood vessels following a recent heart attack.
Hypertension can potentially lead to serious health complications. If left untreated, there will be increased risk of suffering heart failure, heart attack, stroke, and kidney failure. For a number of hypertension sufferers, the condition can remain undiagnosed, and hence untreated. This is due to the condition not usually presenting with any noticeable symptoms. Medicines like Losartan aren’t able to completely cure heart failure or hypertension, but it will help manage both conditions when used as a supplement to a healthy lifestyle.
You will be able to control your blood pressure more effectively by making the right lifestyle choices. Sometimes this may include taking medication, such as Losartan, to supplement a healthy lifestyle. There are many simple choices that can be made to reduce stress on the heart. These include; regular exercise, a low-fat/low-sodium diet, stopping smoking, and reducing the amount of alcohol you drink.
Angiotensin-II is a hormone that controls blood pressure in two ways: it causes vascular muscles to contract, and it causes the kidneys to increase the volume of fluid within the bloodstream. Each of these effects increases blood pressure. ARBs, such as Losartan, prevent angiotensin-II from binding to its receptors in the blood vessels and kidney cells. This inhibits the two effects of angiotensin-II, reducing the workload on the heart and lowering blood pressure.
Losartan can take up to six weeks to fully control your blood pressure. In some cases, you may be prescribed losartan in combination with other similar medicines. It is important that you continue taking Losartan until your doctor advises that you stop, even if you feel healthy.
Why choose The Independent Pharmacy?
Your recommended strength and dose of Losartan will vary depending on the nature of your condition, your medical history and whether you are taking it alone or alongside another blood pressure medicine. Always follow your prescription exactly. It is important that you continue taking Losartan until your doctor advises that you stop, even if you feel healthy.
For high blood pressure, your initial dose will likely be 50mg of Losartan, once a day. This dose may be increased as the treatment proceeds. Losartan tends to take three to six weeks to reach its full effect on blood pressure.
For heart failure, your initial dose will likely be 12.5mg of Losartan per day, though this will gradually be increased until you reach your recommended maintenance dose. You should not exceed 150mg of Losartan per day.
Swallow the tablet whole with a sip of water. Ensure that you drink sufficient water throughout the day when taking this medicine, as it may make you dehydrated.
If, for any reason, you forget to take a tablet, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is nearly time for your next tablet, skip the dose that you missed. Never double your dose to compensate for a dose that you have missed.
Losartan should be stored in a dry place below 25°C.
