Perindopril is a daily treatment for high blood pressure (hypertension). It is an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor. It reduces the heart’s workload by widening blood vessels. Along with hypertension, Perindopril may be prescribed to treat heart failure, or to protect blood vessels following a recent heart attack.

Hypertension is a very common condition. In many cases, it doesn’t present with any noticeable symptoms. However, if left untreated, it can lead to serious complications with your heart, kidneys, brain and other organs. This puts the sufferer at increased risk of heart attack, heart disease, stroke, and kidney failure. Heart failure occurs when the heart is not functioning properly. This can lead to several problems, including an excess of fluid in the bloodstream. Perindopril will not completely cure high blood pressure or heart failure, but it will keep it under control.

By implementing certain lifestyle changes, you will be able to manage your blood pressure more successfully. It may be required to supplement these changes with a hypertension treatment, such as perindopril. Making simple lifestyle changes can significantly reduce the stress on the heart. These include; reducing the amount of fat and salt in your diet, regular exercise, smoking cessation, and cutting down on alcohol.

The angiotensin-converting enzyme controls the amount of fluid in the bloodstream. It also causes blood vessels to contract; both of these effects increase blood pressure. ACE inhibitors, such as Perindopril block the activity of these enzymes, widening blood vessels and decreasing the total volume within the bloodstream.

In some cases, you may be prescribed Perindopril in combination with other similar medicines. It is important that you continue taking Perindopril until your doctor advises that you stop, even if you feel healthy.

Your recommended dose of Perindopril will vary depending on the nature of your condition and whether you have been prescribed Perindopril on its own or alongside another blood pressure medicine. Always follow your prescription exactly.

Generally, the initial dose will be 4mg per day. Your doctor may adjust this dose depending on your body’s response to the medicine. If you suddenly experience dehydration or a drop in blood pressure when first taking Perindopril, your doctor will likely decrease your dose to 2mg per day.

Swallow the tablet with a sip of water. Take Perindopril on an empty stomach, before breakfast every morning.

If, for any reason, you forget to take a tablet, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is nearly time for your next tablet, skip the dose that you missed. Never double your dose to compensate for a dose that you have missed.

While taking Perindopril, avoid any salt substitutes or food additives containing potassium.

Continue taking Perindopril until your doctor advises that you stop, even if you feel healthy.

Not everyone will experience side effects when they take Perindopril, however, if you do they can include:

Dizziness, headache, lightheadedness, cough, muscular weakness, fatigue, blurred vision, tinnitus, digestive problems (including nausea, stomach pain, diarrhoea, constipation)

If you are concerned about these effects, or if the product affects you in any other way, stop using it and talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

The active ingredient contained in Perindopril is:

Perindopril tert-butylamine

Perindopril also contains the following inactive ingredients to make up the complete product:

Lactose anhydrous and magnesium stearate.

Reading the following warnings carefully will help to ensure you are selecting an appropriate product.

In very rare cases, ACE inhibitors may cause angioedema. Symptoms include swelling of the face or tongue, itching, wheezing or feeling lightheaded. Do not take Perindopril if you have suffered from this complication in the past.
