Ezetrol functions as a cholesterol absorption inhibitor. It is available in tablets, which contain 10mg of the active ingredient ezetimibe. Ezetrol is prescribed to people who have struggled to lower their cholesterol with diet alone. It is often prescribed alongside a statin, a class of medicine that reduces cholesterol in a different way.
High cholesterol doesn’t present with any obvious symptoms, though if not managed, the condition can potentially lead to a number of serious circulatory problems. These can include heart attack and stroke. Considering the health implications, it is very important to be aware of your cholesterol levels. Lifestyle factors, such as fatty foods, alcohol, smoking, and a lack of exercise can all contribute to raised levels of cholesterol. High cholesterol can also be a consequence of other conditions, such as diabetes. Some people may be more prone to having high cholesterol due to family history.
We all need cholesterol in our bodies. At lower levels, it performs an essential role within the bloodstream. Cholesterol is used by the body to transport fat, which leads to healthy cell tissue growth. This is known as high-density lipoprotein (HDL), or “good” cholesterol. The required levels of good cholesterol are produced naturally in the liver. When there is an excess amount of cholesterol in the blood (due to poor diet and other lifestyle factors), these excess fats start to group together. This formation can cause blockages that stops blood from flowing freely. This is known as low-density lipoprotein or “bad” cholesterol.
Most cholesterol medication involves reducing the production of cholesterol in the liver. Ezetrol is different, in that it lowers the amount of cholesterol that the body takes in from food. This prevents excess low-density lipoprotein (“bad” cholesterol) from entering the bloodstream.
Why choose The Independent Pharmacy?
The recommended dosage of Ezetrol is one 10mg tablet per day. The tablet should be swallowed whole with a sip of water. Ezetrol can be taken at any time during the day, but should be taken at the same time each day if possible. It is up to you whether or not you take Ezetrol with food.
High cholesterol medication is most effective when combined with a low-cholesterol diet and regular exercise. It will also help to reduce your consumption of tobacco and alcohol.
Not everyone will experience side effects when they take Ezetrol, however, if you do they can include:
When Ezetrol is used alone – diarrhoea, abdominal pain, fatigue
When used together with a statin – a headache, muscle problems, strain on the liver
