Testim Gel (Returning Patients)

Testim Gel (Returning Patients) (30 tubes of 5g)

Sorry, this treatment is currently out of stock.

Unfortunately, Testim is currently unavailable from the manufacturers. It is expected to be available again at the end of August.

We recommend Testogel as a suitable alternative for the interim, should you need a supply in the meantime. Testogel contains the same active ingredient at the same strength and is applied in the same way as Testim.

Testim gel is a medication which is used to replace testosterone for men suffering from hypogonadism – a condition in which the body cannot naturally produce enough testosterone. Testosterone is produced in the testicles and is responsible for sperm production, as well as the development of male characteristics such as facial hair and a deep voice. Testosterone also plays a vital role in sexual function and drive as well as the development and strength of muscle tissue.

Testim gel contains testosterone and can be applied directly to your skin, allowing it to be absorbed directly into your body. From here, it enters your bloodstream, topping up your levels of testosterone.

For males, testosterone plays a vital role in many facets of life, including:

  • Sperm production
  • Sex drive
  • Erectile potency
  • The general functioning of the prostate

A low production of testosterone can lead to further medical problems such as:

  • Decreased sex drive
  • Impotence
  • Infertility
  • Decreased mental activity
  • Decreased physical activity
  • Weakening of the bones

As men age, their natural testosterone production levels slowly decrease. If one or both testicles have to be removed, for example as a result of testicular cancer, then testosterone production will be drastically decreased. Other causes include a decrease in testicle function as a result of testicular disease, this is known as hypogonadism or eunuchoidism. Another cause is a decrease is gonadotrophin production by your pituitary gland which is caused by pituitary disease.

Treatments for replacing testosterone, such as Testim gel, should only be used by men who have been diagnosed by a doctor to have low levels of testosterone. Do not use Testim gel if your testosterone levels are normal as this may cause serious side effects and will provide you with no benefit.

Testosterone replacement medications can be used alongside medications for ED (erectile dysfunction), such as Viagra, Levitra, and Cialis.

Testim gel comes in the form of 5g tubes and each one contains 50mg of testosterone.

If you use testosterone gels it is possible to transfer it to other people if you come into skin contact with them. Because of this it is advised that you take precautions, especially around pregnant women and children. This is because testosterone can produce masculine symptoms such as the growth of facial hair and deepening of the voice. Always thoroughly wash your hands after applying the gel and try to cover the area where possible. You should take a shower before any close interaction, such as sexual intercourse. The gel should be left on for at least six hours before showering.

Before taking any testosterone replacement medication you will need to undergo blood tests. If you experience any of the following symptoms then you should contact your doctor immediately as it means that your testosterone levels are too high:

  • Persistent erections
  • Irritability
  • Weight gain
  • Nervousness

Increased testosterone levels can increase the rate at which prostate cancers grow. Because of this your doctor will perform a thorough examination of your prostate before beginning this medication. Once you have begun testosterone replacement therapy your doctor will want to continue with prostate exams at least every year.

The only way that levels of testosterone can be measured is via a blood test. Because levels of testosterone in the blood change throughout the day, multiple readings will need to be taken in order to know for sure. Early morning is usually the best time as this is when testosterone levels are highest.

Testim gel only needs to be used once a day and should be preferably taken in the morning. The gel should always be applied after a shower, never before. The area of application should remain unwashed for at least 6 hours, allowing time for the testosterone to be fully absorbed.

The usual dosage of Testim gel is 5g per day. In certain circumstance two tubes may be prescribed per day, if this is the case it should be applied to both sides of the body.

Most people will not suffer from any adverse side effects as a result of using Testim gel, however some common potential side effects include:

  • Redness
  • Rash or other application site reaction
  • Headache
  • Acne

If you experience any side effects not listed here or have any further concerns about Testim gel then you should contact your doctor immediately.

There is only one active ingredient in Testim gel:

  • Testosterone 50mg

There are also several inactive ingredients in Testim gel:

  • Ethanol (approximately 74%)
  • Carbomers (980 and 1342)
  • Trometamol
  • Pentadecalactone
  • Macrogol 1000
  • Propylene glycol

  • Purified water

Before using Testim gel you should read the following warnings.

Testim gel should only be used by men who are over the age of 18. Women or children should avoid coming into contact with any parts of the body that have been applied with Testim gel. This product should not be used by women of any age.

Testim gel should not be used if:

  • You have or may have prostate cancer.
  • You have or may have male breast cancer.
  • You are allergic to any of the ingredients in this medication.

Before using Testim gel you should speak to your doctor if:

  • You have difficulty urinating.
  • You are currently suffering from kidney, liver, or heart disease.
  • You have high levels of calcium in your blood or urine as a result of bone cancer.
  • You have high blood pressure.
  • You have ever had ischaemic heart disease.
  • You have epilepsy.
  • You suffer from migraines.
  • You have difficulty breathing in your sleep (this is more likely if you are overweight or suffer from chronic lung disease.

Any of the conditions listed above may become aggravated when using Testim gel – for this reason you should fully inform your doctor before usage.

If, after applying Testim gel to your skin, you develop a negative reaction to the gel, then cease usage and contact your doctor immediately.

If you are a competing athlete then it is important to bear in mind that Testim gel may produce positive results in doping tests. Testosterone should not be used by healthy individuals as a way to improve strength or muscle mass.

Always inform your doctor if you are taking any other medications as they will be in a better position as to advise you going forward. Testim gel can affect other medicines, and for this reason your dosing may need to be altered. If you are taking any of the following then this is particularly important:

  • If you are taking insulin to control your blood sugar levels (as in diabetes), then you might need to change you dose of insulin when using Testim gel.
  • If you are taking blood thinning drugs (anticoagulants) then Testim gel may increase their effects.
  • If you are taking corticosteroids, or drugs which alter the production of these hormones, in conjunction with Testim gel then your body may retain more water.

It is possible that treatments with testosterone may affect your body’s level of the hormone thyroid. The thyroid gland is responsible for regulating your body’s metabolism and general growth and is located in the neck. These small changes in thyroid levels should not have any overall negative affect on you.

Propylene glycol is present in Testim gel and this may irritate your skin.

Measures should be taken to avoid spreading Testim gel to other individuals, especially women and children. This can increase their testosterone levels and lead to unwanted side effects. Here are some tips to avoid transferring the gel onto other people:

  • Thoroughly wash your hands with soap after every application.
  • Once the gel has dried, cover it up with clothing.
  • Before having skin on skin contact with someone you should shower, or take precautions to wear clothing.
  • You should leave as long a time as possible between applying the gel and subsequently coming into skin contact.

What should you do if you unintentionally expose someone to Testim gel?

If someone becomes exposed to your Testim gel then you should thoroughly wash the area of contact immediately to avoid absorption. The longer Testim gel is left on the body the more testosterone will be absorbed. This is even more important if coming into contact with pregnant women and children.

If they develop any symptoms associated with increased levels of testosterone, such as increased hair growth or acne, then they should contact their doctor immediately.

Before undergoing any treatment you should always read all available information in order to make sure you are making a fully informed decision.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • I have heard of Testim gel, Testogel, and Tostran – What is the difference?

Both Testim gel and Testogel are available in boxes of 30 sachets or tubes. Some individuals do not like the unpleasant odour of Testim gel so Testogel is available as an alternative.

Tostran on the other hand is available in pump form and should be applied to the shoulders.

  • Can Testim be used for bodybuilding and building muscle?

Testim treatment helps patients with low testosterone levels to alleviate symptoms such as reduced muscle mass. It should not be used in bodybuilding, and should not be used without consulting a medical practitioner. Unsolicited use of this product can be harmful to your health.

  • Is Testim gel safe to use?

Testim gel is safe to use, but only in men who are affected by long term testosterone deficiency. This gel is not safe for women or children.

  • Does this treatment help treat women going through the menopause?

There has been some recent research into hormone replacement therapy as a treatment for symptoms of the menopause. However, Testim is not prescribed to treat menopausal symptoms, as safety studies have not been carried out.

  • Does Testim cause hair growth?

Testim, as a testosterone replacement treatment, can sometimes cause additional hair growth.

  • How long can Testim take to work?

Testim is a long-term treatment for low testosterone. You may start to notice effects after 14 days of continuous treatment. At this stage, testosterone levels and dosage are measured and adjusted accordingly.

  • Can Testim help prevent infertility?

Testim can be an effective treatment in men who are struggling with libido and fertility problems by alleviating the effects of low testosterone levels.

  • Preventing the gel transferring on to other people

When using Testim, you need to be wary of the gel transferring to other people. This could happen with bodily contact, shared clothing or bed sheets. This can cause side effects in people who have made contact in this way, even if it is a small amount of the product. It is important to prevent this from happening – particularly with women or children.

You should wash your hands after applying the gel, cover the application site with clothing once the gel has dried, and shower before any contact is anticipated.
