Propranolol tablets are a daily medicine for the prevention of migraines. 80mg capsules slowly release the medicine over 24 hours, meaning you only need to take one per day. 40mg tablets are taken twice a day, though this dose can be increased to three if necessary.

While Propranolol will probably not completely stop your migraine attacks, it will significantly reduce the frequency and severity of migraine episodes. You should keep a record of your migraines to track how effectively the medicine is working.

You might want to consider Propranolol if you have more than two migraine episodes per month, and/or if you have had limited success with triptan medicines such as rizatriptan, almotriptan or sumatriptan. If you do have a migraine episode while taking Propranolol, it is still safe to use painkillers or a triptan. In order to assess which treatment is generally most effective for you, use the same treatment for three consecutive migraine episodes.

Propranolol is a beta-blocker which can take up to three months to reach its full effect. So, do not be discouraged if you do not notice its preventative effects at first. Patients generally take propranolol for 4-6 months – after this period, you should stop to see if the medicine is still necessary. If it is, you can easily restart the treatment.

  • Buccastem M to help with nausea.

*Prescription medicines are supplied subject to a medical consultation at the discretion of a doctor.

If you are using Propranolol 80mg, take one capsule per day. If you are using Propranolol 40mg, take 2-3 tablets per day.

Swallow the capsule whole with a sip of water. This can be done with or without food. The medicine will be most effective if you take it at a similar time each day.

It is important not to miss any doses, even if you feel unwell. If you suddenly stop taking Propranolol, you may become more susceptible to side effects. If for any reason, you need to stop taking this medicine, your GP will reduce your dose gradually. If you do miss a dose, take the capsule as soon as possible, unless it is nearly time for the following dose. If this is the case, skip the first dose and resume your regular routine. Never double your dose to compensate for a skipped capsule.

Not everyone will experience side effects when they take Propranolol 80mg MR capsules, however, if you do they can include:

Fatigue, insomnia, cold extremities (these symptoms tend to go away as you continue taking the medicine), Raynaud’s syndrome, nightmares, slow or irregular heartbeat.

If you are concerned about these effects, or if the product affects you in any other way, stop using it and talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
