Gonorrhoea antibiotic treatment (Suprax & Azithromycin) is available to buy from The Independent Pharmacy Online Doctor service, following a free consultation, to treat gonorrhoea in men & women. To find out more about the STI, gonorrhoea, and see all the available treatments, see our Online Doctor Gonorrhoea page.

Antibiotic treatment for gonorrhoea consists of treatment with two different single-dose antibiotics. Cefixime (Suprax) is a broad-spectrum antibiotic and is effective at killing a wide variety of bacteria. When being taken to treat the sexually-transmitted infection Gonorrhea, it is used in conjunction with another antibiotic, called Azithromycin. The dosage for successfully treating Gonorrhea with these antibiotics is:

  • Two Suprax 200mg tablets and two Azithromycin 500mg tablets together as a single dose.

Dual antibiotic treatment with Suprax & Azithromycin for gonorrhoea will also treat chlamydia. This is necessary as a significant number of people who contract gonorrhoea will also catch chlamydia at the same time.

Cefixime works by interfering with a bacteria’s ability to form cell walls. These walls are vital to the bacteria’s survival as they keep any unwanted substance out of the cell, as well as preventing anything inside from leaking out. Suprax tablets compromises the bonds that holds the bacterial cell walls together. This will allow holes to appear in the cell walls, which will kill the bacteria.

Suprax 200mg Tablets contain the active ingredient Cefixime. Suprax is manufacturd by Sanofi-Aventis. As well as gonorrhoea, Cefixime (Suprax) can be used to treat a variety of bacterial infections including urinary tract infections, bacterial infections of the lungs, and bacterial infections of the middle ear although different doses are required.

Suprax or Cefixime is categorised as a prescription only medicine (POM) and is a type of antibiotic known as a Cephalosporin. These types of antibiotics are related to Penicillin, so it is not recommended to take Suprax if a known allergy to Penicillin exists. Suprax 200mg Tablets are round in shape and white in colour. The tablets are marked ‘ORO’ on one side with the other side being plain.

To find out more about Azithromycin, you can read about it on our Azithromycin Chlamydia page.

  • Take all FOUR tablets as a single dose (TWO Suprax 200mg & TWO Azithromycin 500mg).
  • Swallow all the tablets whole with plenty of water.

Each Suprax tablet contains cefixime 200mg as the active ingredient.

Each tablet also contains: microcrystalline cellulose, pregelatinised starch, calcium hydrogen phosphate dihydrate, magnesium stearate, hypromellose, macrogol 6000 and titanium dioxide (E171).

Each Azithromycin tablet contains the active ingredient azithromycin dihydrate 500mg.

Each tablet also contains: Core: croscarmellose sodium (E468), magnesium stearate (E572), microcrystalline cellulose (E460), silicium dioxide, (E551), poloxamer, povidone (E1201), talc, and waterfree lactose. Coating: hypromellose (E464), hydroxypropylcellulose, macrogol and titanium dioxide (E171).

If you have any of the following symptoms, you may have a severe allergic reaction to Azithromycin, stop taking it and tell your doctor immediately or go to the casualty department at your nearest hospital.

The following are serious side effects that occur in a very small minority of patients. If you experience any of the following side effects you should see your GP as soon as possible.

Signs of an allergic reaction include: a rash, swallowing or breathing problems, swelling of the lips, face, throat and tongue.

It is not suitable for our Online Doctor to prescribe Azithromycin & Suprax to treat gonorrhoea (& chlamydia) for you if:

  • you have severe liver or kidney problems.
  • you have severe heart problems or problems with your heart beat such as long QT syndrome (shown on an electro-cardiogram or ECG machine).
  • your blood levels of potassium or magnesium are too low.

  • you have a certain type of muscle weakness called myasthenia gravis.
  • you have nervous (neurological) or mental (psychiatric) problems.
  • you have ever had colitis.
  • you are taking medicine to thin the blood such as warfarin.

If any of the above conditions apply you should see your GP for advice and treatment of gonorrhoea.

If you notice blood in your stool, or suffer with fever, chills, or severe headache your infection may be more serious and you should see a doctor as soon as possible. If symptoms include a thick or bloody discharge from the penis with soreness or inflammation in men or women with heavy offensive vaginal discharge or irregular bleeding and low abdominal pain, you should see your GP as this could indicate a more serious infection.
