More Information

Age: 18 years + Pregnancy: Not suitable Breastfeeding: Not suitable

Progestogen-only contraceptive pills, like Cerazette, contain progestogens but not oestrogens. They help to make it harder for the sperm to penetrate the womb by thickening the cervical mucus. Some can also help to stop ovulation depending on the type of progestogen they contain. If taken correctly they are over 99% successful at preventing pregnancy.

Pharmacist Tip

A progestogen-only pill like Cerazette is suitable for women over 35, smokers, women who are overweight and those who cannot take eostrogen.

Cerazette is a progestogen-only contraceptive pill containing the active ingredient desogestrel. It helps to make it harder for the sperm to penetrate the womb by thickening the cervical mucus. It is over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy if taken correctly.

Please read the Patient Information Leaflet for side effects and additional information.

Pharmacist Tip: Cerazette should be taken regularly at roughly the same time every day within a 12-hour window. Your period may stop, become lighter or irregular. If you miss one pill anywhere in your pack and it is less than 12 hours late, take it as soon as you remember even if it means taking two pills in a day. You should continue taking your pills as normal and you will not need additional contraception. If you miss more than one pillor it is more than 12 hours late you will lose your contraceptive cover and extra contraception will be required for at least 7 days.

  • Start your packet of pills with the first pill at a convenient time of day.
  • Continue taking one pill at the same time each day within a 3-hour window (12 hours for Cerazette), working your way around the pack until it is finished after 28 days.
  • Your pill may affect your period; it can stop, become lighter or irregular.
  • You should start your new pack of pills the day after taking the last pill of the previous pack.

Missed Pill Advice

According to NHS Choices; if you have missed one pill, but are less than 12 hours late:

  • take the last pill you missed now, even if it means taking two pills in one day
  • continue taking the rest of the pack as usual
  • you don’t need to use additional contraception, such as condoms

However, if you have missed one pill and you are more than 12 hours late:

  • take the last pill you missed now, even if it means taking two pills in one day
  • leave any earlier missed pills
  • continue taking the rest of the pack as usual and use an extra method of contraception for the next seven days
  • you may need emergency contraception

If you do experience side effects from your contraceptive pill they may include headaches, nausea, sickness, breast tenderness, and mood swings. These should normally only last for the first few months if they are experienced. If they last longer than this please consult your doctor.

If you experience any adverse effects from taking your prescribed medicine it is important to let us know immediately. Please log in to your online account and message one of our healthcare professionals or alternatively call us on 0117 971 1603. In a medical emergency you should contact the emergency services or go straight to your local Accident & Emergency.

The contraceptive pill should not cause a harmful interaction with any of your other current medicines.  Some medicines can reduce the effectiveness of the contraceptive pill including some antibiotics; these were checked during your online consultation. Please read the Patient Information Leaflet enclosed with your medicines for a full list of medicines that may affect your contraceptive pill.
