Pharmacist Tip

If you have missed one pill, anywhere in the pack, take the last pill you missed now, even if it means taking two pills in one day. You will not normally need to take additional contraceptive precautions.

Gedarel 30/150 tablets are a prescription-only-medicine (POM) that is mainly used as an oral contraceptive pill for women. It is distributed in The UK by Consilient Health Ltd. Each pack contains sixty-three tablets in three blisters of twenty-one. Each blister is marked with the days of the week, designed to help the user remember when to take their dose. Gedarel tablets are white, round with the markings ‘P8’ on one side of the tablet and ‘RG’ on the other. Every packet of Gedarel 30/150 contains a comprehensive patient information leaflet (PIL). Gedarel also comes with a handy cardboard blister container, which makes transporting single blisters more compact and convenient.

Gedarel contains two active ingredients; Ethinylestradiol 30mcg and Desogestrel 150mcg. These ingredients are synthetic versions of the naturally occurring sex hormones, Oestrogen and Progesterone.

  • Ethinylestradiol = Oestrogen
  • Desogestrel = Progesterone

During a woman’s natural menstrual cycle, the levels of her sex hormones will fluctuate throughout the month. These fluctuations will trigger the release of an egg from the ovaries-this is known as ‘ovulation’. These hormonal changes also causes the lining of the womb (endometrium) to thicken in preparation for a possible pregnancy. At the end of the menstrual cycle, if an egg hasn’t been fertilised the level of sex hormones will drop, resulting in the shedding of the wombs lining. This is known as a woman’s monthly period or menstruation.

Gedarel 30/150 is a combined oral contraceptive. It works by over-riding the natural menstrual cycle. When taken correctly the synthetic hormones in Gedarel will trick a woman’s body into believing that ovulation has occurred. This prevents an actual egg from both ripening and being released from the ovaries.

The action of Gedarel tablets also increases the thickness of the mucus found naturally at the neck of the womb. This will restrict the amount of sperm that can successfully penetrate the vagina and reach the womb. Gedarel also has the added effect of altering the consistency of the womb’s lining, making it less hospitable for fertilised eggs to attach and implant there.

Gedarel 30/500 tablets are monophasic, which means that each tablet contains the same dose of the actives ingredients (Ethinylestradiol 30mcg & Desogestrel 150mcg). One Gedarel tablet is taken each day for three weeks. This is followed by a seven day pill-free break. If the preceding dose has been followed correctly then the user will still be protected against pregnancy during these seven days. As the levels of hormones drop during this pill-free week, a withdrawal bleed will occur. This is similar to a woman’s natural period. The next packet of Gedarel 30/150 should be commenced as soon as the seven pill-free days are over, even if the user is still experiencing her withdrawal bleed.

Please read the Patient Information Leaflet for side effects and additional information.

Pharmacist Tip: Gedarel 30/150 should be taken regularly at roughly the same time every day with a 7-day pill-free break after each pack. If you miss one pill anywhere in your pack, take it as soon as you remember even if it means taking two pills in a day. You should continue taking your pills as normal and you will not need additional contraception. If you miss more than one pill you will lose your contraceptive cover and extra contraception will be required for at least 7 days.

  • Start your packet of pills with the first pill marked with the correct day of the week.
  • Continue taking one pill at the same time each day, working your way around the pack until it is finished.
  • You should then have a 7-day break when you will have your period.
  • You should then start your new pack of pills on the 8th day (this will be the same day that you started your last new pack).

Missed Pill Advice

According to NHS Choices; if you have missed one pill, anywhere in the pack:

  • take the last pill you missed now, even if it means taking two pills in one day
  • continue taking the rest of the pack as usual
  • you don’t need to use additional contraception, such as condoms
  • take your seven day pill-free break as normal

However, if you have missed two or more pills (you are taking your pill more than 48 hours late) anywhere in the pack:

  • take the last pill you missed now, even if it means taking two pills in one day
  • leave any earlier missed pills
  • continue taking the rest of the pack as usual and use an extra method of contraception for the next seven days
  • you may need emergency contraception
  • you may need to start the next pack of pills without a break

Each Gedarel 30/150 tablet contains the same dose of the active ingredients Ethinylestradiol 30mcg & Desogestrel 150mcg.

The other ingredients are:
Tablet core: Potato starch; stearic acid; all-rac-alpha-tocopherol; lactose monohydrate; magnesium stearate; silica colloidal anhydrous; povidone K 30.
Tablet coating: Hypromellose; Macrogol 6000; propylene glycol.

If you do experience side effects from your Gedarel 30/150 contraceptive pill they may include headaches, nausea, sickness, breast tenderness, and mood swings. These should normally only last for the first few months if they are experienced. If they last longer than this please consult your doctor.

In a medical emergency you should contact the emergency services or go straight to your local Accident & Emergency.

  • Sudden wheeziness, difficulty in breathing, chest pain, fever, sudden swellings, rash or itching (especially affecting the whole body).

  • You experience dizziness or you faint.
  • You develop a problem with your sight or speech.

The Gedarel 30/150 contraceptive pill should not cause a harmful interaction with any of your other current medicines.  Some medicines can reduce the effectiveness of the contraceptive pill including some antibiotics; see below for a full list of interacting medicines. Please read the Patient Information Leaflet enclosed with your medicines for a full list of medicines that may affect Gedarel.

Taking your pill whilst suffering with sickness and/or diarrhoea

Gedarel 30/150 may not work if you have a stomach upset or you are sick, or if you have severe diarrhoea. You should carry on taking the tablets as normal, but use a condom while you are ill and for the next seven days. If these seven days run beyond the end of the blister strip, start the next pack without a break.

Medical check-ups while taking Gedarel

It is important to get regular check-ups from your GP or practice nurse whilst you are taking Gedarel 30/150. Your blood pressure will be checked before you start Synphase and then at regular intervals whilst you are on Gedarel. You may be required to have an examination of your breasts, abdomen and pelvis including taking a cervical smear test at regular intervals, if this is considered necessary by the doctor. We are unable to provide supplies of contraceptive pills if the regular check-ups are not up to date.

Medicines that reduce the effectiveness of the contraceptive pill

The following medicines may stop Gedarel 30/150 from working properly (the condition they treat being shown in brackets):

  • The herbal remedy St John’s wort – Latin name Hypericum perforatum (depression)
  • Carbamazepine (epilepsy)
  • Oxacarbazepine (epilepsy)
  • Phenytoin (epilepsy)
  • Phenobarbital (sleeplessness, anxiety, epilepsy)
  • Primidone (epilepsy)
  • Topiramate (epilepsy)
  • Nelfinavir (HIV – Human Immunodeficiency Virus - infection)
  • Nevirapine (HIV infection and AIDS)
  • Ritonavir (HIV infection and AIDS)
  • Rifabutin (bacterial infection)
  • Rifampicin (bacterial infection)
  • Griseofulvin (fungal infection)
  • Modafinil (narcolepsy i.e. daytime sleepiness)

Taking the contraceptive pill may cause small increases in the likliness of some medical conditions such as blood clots, breast cancer, cervical cancer, and liver cancer. Your GP should have discussed these with you before you started taking Gedarel. The risk depends on the length of time you take Gedarel 30/150, other medicines you take and your current state of health.
