Treclin Information
Treclin is a prescription combination acne gel containing two active ingredients: clindamycin 1% and tretinoin 0.025%. Clindamycin is an antibiotic that helps reduce bacteria and inflammation, and Tretinoin helps clear blocked pores and prevent new breakouts from forming. If you’re experiencing moderate acne and are over 12 years old, Treclin may be suitable for you. Treclin comes in a 30g tube as a translucent yellow gel, ready to be used once per evening.
How Does Treclin Acne Gel Work?
Treclin works in two ways. First, the antibiotic Clindamycin fights the bacteria that cause spots to form and reduces inflammation of the skin. At the same time, Tretinoin helps your skin stay unblocked by making sure dead skin cells shed properly. Between the two, they tackle whiteheads, blackheads, inflamed spots and redness. Combining the ingredients to use them together makes Treclin more effective than using each ingredient individually.

How To Take/Use Treclin Gel
You should use Treclin once daily, at bedtime. Use a mild soap to gently cleanse your face, and pat dry with a clean towel. Apply a small, pea-sized amount of Treclin gel to your fingertip, dot it onto the affected areas (forehead, chin, nose, and cheeks), before gently spreading it over your whole face. Never use more than directed, and if you miss an application, don’t double up - just continue treatment as normal, skipping the missed dose. Using too much can irritate the skin and won’t speed up the results.
It typically takes several weeks to see results, so don’t be discouraged if you don’t notice a difference immediately. You shouldn’t use Treclin for more than three months without seeking medical advice to make sure it’s still suitable for you.
Ingredients
Treclin Gel contains two active ingredients: clindamycin 10 mg/g, an antibiotic, and tretinoin 0.25 mg/g. These are the bits that do the heavy lifting, unblocking your pores and renewing your skin. The inactive ingredients are the ones that keep the treatment working, shelf stable and safe to use. The other ingredients are purified water, glycerol, carbomers, methyl parahydroxybenzoate (E218), polysorbate 80 (E433), disodium edetate, anhydrous citric acid, propyl parahydroxybenzoate (E216), butyl hydroxytoluene (E321), trometamol.
Side Effects
When you first start using Treclin Gel, you may notice some side effects. These could include dry skin, irritation, a stinging or burning sensation or a slight peeling of your skin. These typically subside after a few weeks, and can often actually be a sign that the treatment is working. As your skin adjusts to the treatment they should resolve, but severe discomfort, ongoing redness or signs of an allergic reaction should prompt you to stop using the gel and seek medical attention.
Warnings
You shouldn’t use Treclin Gel if you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant. You should use contraception while using this medicine and for one month after you finish using Treclin Gel.
For more information, read our acne during pregnancy guide.
You should also avoid using this medication if you’re allergic to any of the ingredients. Treclin can make inflammatory bowel disease, eczema and rosacea worse, so you shouldn’t use it if you have those conditions.
When using Treclin, always avoid getting it in your eyes or inside your nose or mouth. You should use sunscreen and avoid direct sun for the duration of your treatment. This is because Treclin causes your skin to be more sensitive to sunlight.
For all warnings and side effects, please see the Patient Information Leaflet.

Treclin Gel FAQs
How Long Does Treclin Gel Take To Work?
Treclin isn’t an immediate fix - it typically takes several weeks to start showing results. Most people see an improvement after eight weeks, but you may need to use it for 12 weeks to see the full effect.
Even if you start to see improvement, you should still keep using Treclin - stopping it prematurely could lead to your symptoms coming back. Continuing use can help to keep your acne under control.
If you don’t notice an improvement after 12 weeks, get back in touch with our clinical team, who can provide advice. It may be that you need additional or alternative options.
Can I Use Treclin Gel With Other Skincare Products?
You should avoid using Treclin Gel with other acne treatments or products that can dry out or irritate your skin, especially those containing benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, or strong exfoliants.
Throughout the course of your treatment with Treclin, you should use gentle moisturisers with non-comedogenic ingredients to make sure they don’t block your pores. Always apply sunscreen during the day to protect your skin from the sun.
Is Treclin Gel Safe During Pregnancy?
Treclin Gel is not safe to use during pregnancy. You shouldn’t use it if you’re planning on getting pregnant either. This is because the tretinoin may harm your unborn baby. You should use effective contraception during treatment and for a minimum of one month after finishing using Treclin.
How Should I Apply Treclin Gel To My Face?
To use Treclin, first thoroughly wash your face with a gentle cleanser. Pat dry with a clean towel and squeeze a pea-sized amount of Treclin onto your index finger. Dot the gel onto the key affected areas of your face, such as your forehead, chin and both cheeks. Spread the gel evenly over your whole face. Be careful to avoid your eyes, mouth, and any broken or irritated skin while applying.
What Should I Do If I Experience Skin Irritation?
It’s common to experience some skin irritation when you first start using Treclin. You may experience dryness, redness or stinging - or a combination of these. This usually improves as your skin gets used to the treatment. If the irritation is too much for you, you can try reducing the application frequency - apply every other night instead of nightly. If the irritation becomes severe or gets worse, you should speak to our clinical team for advice.
Can Treclin Gel Make My Acne Worse Before It Gets Better?
It can be perfectly normal for your skin to get worse before it gets better - as your skin adjusts to the treatment, it may experience a purge. This is common and shouldn’t cause alarm. After your skin gets used to the treatment, though, it should settle down, and you should notice an improvement in your symptoms.
Does Treclin Gel Expire?
Treclin gel does expire, yes. You’ll find the expiry date printed on the carton and tube. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month and indicates the last day you can use the product. After you’ve opened the gel, it’ll last for three months - after that, you should discard any leftover. Store Treclin below 25°C and away from heat or direct sunlight. Always keep out of reach of children.
Is Treclin Gel Suitable For All Types Of Acne?
Treclin is specifically for moderate acne vulgaris. It should not be used to treat rosacea or eczema, as it can worsen these conditions. Simpler treatments may be able to manage mild acne, and Treclin may not be strong enough to tackle severe forms like cystic or nodular acne. Our clinical team can help advise if Treclin is right for your skin concerns or if an alternative treatment would be better.
Can I Use Makeup While Using Treclin Gel?
You can use makeup while you’re using Treclin. Because you apply Treclin at night, wearing makeup during the day shouldn’t interfere with how the treatment works. To get the best results, use non-comedogenic makeup - that is, makeup that won’t clog your pores. Always remove makeup thoroughly before applying Treclin at night. Consider double cleansing to ensure all traces are removed. This helps prevent irritation and allows the treatment to work properly on clean skin.
What Are The Alternatives To Treclin Gel?
If our clinical team determines that Treclin isn’t the best option for your acne, many alternatives might be suitable. These include topical antibiotics, retinoids (like adapalene), benzoyl peroxide products, or other combination treatments. You could also be prescribed oral antibiotics.
Treclin should not be used with other antibiotic treatments, as this can increase the risk of side effects. Our clinical team can help you find a treatment that’s right for you.
