Almotriptan 12.5mg tablets information

What is Almotriptan and what is it used for?

Almotriptan tablets provide effective relief from migraine attacks. The active ingredient is almotriptan, which is one of the several types of 'triptan' medicine. These medicines are all specifically used to relieve migraine headaches caused by inflammation and dilation of the blood vessels within the brain.

Almotriptan 12.5 mg tablets are available in boxes of 6 tablets and are suitable for use by adults between the ages of 18 - 65 years.

What are migraines?

Migraine headaches affect 25% of women and 8% of men in the UK. The condition is thought to be at least partially hereditary, meaning you may be more susceptible if someone in your close family also suffers from migraine episodes. You may find that the most severe attacks will completely disrupt your day. Symptoms of a migraine include:

  • Nausea
  • Throbbing pain in the head
  • Increased intolerance to strong light, noise and smell

About 1 in 4 people who suffer from migraines experience some form of a warning sign (or 'aura') before the onset of each headache. This may involve visual cues such as blurred or distorted vision. A silent migraine occurs when the aura occurs but is not followed by an episode. Migraine episodes usually last for a few hours but can continue for as long as three days. After a headache has subsided, you may feel fatigued for several subsequent days.

There are a number of things that may trigger a migraine attack, including:

    • A poor diet
    • Alcohol
    • Caffeine
    • Stress
    • Lack of sleep
    • Some women regularly suffer from migraine attacks during their period.

    How does Almotriptan work?

It is not completely understood what causes the onset of migraine episodes. However, the throbbing pain is thought to occur due to the widening of the brain's blood vessels. Almotriptan is a serotonin (or 5HT) agonist, meaning it stimulates the brain's serotonin receptors causing blood vessels to narrow, relieving pain.

Almotriptan is most effective if taken at the start of a migraine attack, but will also provide relief if taken later on during the episode. 'Triptans' do not prevent migraines, however, they can be taken alongside preventative medicines.
