• I used to be prescribed Almogran but have now been given Almotriptan. What is the difference between the two?

  

  Almotriptan is the active ingredient in Almogran tablets. The patent on the Almogran brand has expired in recent years, meaning the generic medicine Almotriptan is now available.

  When a medicine is first introduced onto the market it is given a license or patent. Only that manufacturer can produce it. When the patent expires, other companies can produce the treatment as well, usually leading to a dramatic drop in the price due to increased competition. Generic treatments are still produced by licensed manufacturers and must conform to the same strict manufacturing standards that the branded medicines meet.

• What do Almotriptan/Almogran tablets contain?

  

  There is 12.5mg of the active ingredient Almotriptan in each tablet. There are also several inactive ingredients: those which make up the body of the tablet and agents used in the manufacturing and tableting process. For more details, please see the 'Ingredients' tab above.

• How does Almotriptan work?

  

  It is not completely understood what causes the onset of migraine episodes. However, the throbbing pain is thought to occur due to the widening of the brain's blood vessels.

  Almotriptan is a serotonin (or 5HT) agonist, meaning it stimulates the brain's serotonin receptors. The drug mimics the activity of serotonin by stimulating these receptors. This causes blood vessels to narrow, relieving pain.

• How do I take Almotriptan tablets?

  

  Almotriptan is most effective if taken at the start of a migraine attack, but will also provide relief if taken later on during the episode. After two hours, you can take a second dose if the attack has either returned or not gone away. Do not exceed two doses (two tablets) within a 24-hour period.

• Is it safe to use other migraine treatments alongside Almotriptan?

  

  It is safe to use painkillers (such as aspirin, paracetamol or ibuprofen) or anti-nausea medicines (such as Buccastem or Prochlorperazine Buccal Tablets) at the same time as Almotriptan.

  However, do not use two 'triptan' medicines together. Because these all have similar effects, it will not provide additional benefit to taking more than one at the same time. Instead, you may exceed the safe dosage and put yourself at risk of adverse side effects.

• How much Almotriptan can I buy in one purchase?

• Does Almotriptan help to prevent Migraines?

  

  Almotriptan and other triptans are used to treat acute attacks of a migraine. They work by reversing the widened blood vessels in the brain that cause migraines. For this reason, they should only be used to treat existing, or oncoming migraines; not to prevent them.

  Almotriptan can be used alongside traditional painkillers such as paracetamol and ibuprofen if extra pain relief is necessary whilst the tablet is taking effect.

• Will Almotriptan definitely cure my Migraines?

  Triptan migraine treatments all have the same mechanism of action. However, people respond to each one differently, for unknown reasons. If one treatment, such as Almotriptan, has not had the desired effects, it is worth trying a different treatment to see if it is more effective for you.

• What other steps can I take to help my Migraines?

  

  This will depend on your symptoms and triggers. For example, people who suffer from sensitivity to light should sit or lie in a darkened room. Those who experience issues with sound should go somewhere quiet or use a good pair of earplugs to avoid irritating their symptoms further.

  Often people feel better after eating, drinking or taking a nap as well as taking any necessary treatment.

• Can I break the tablets in half if needed?

  

  We would advise you not to split these tablets in order to change the dosage. This is because it is impossible to ensure that you will actually split the tablet in half, or that the medicine is evenly distributed throughout the tablet. So, you will not know the exact amount you are taking.
