Otomize Ear Spray information

  • What is Otomize Ear Spray?

Otomize Ear Spray is an antibacterial, steroidal treatment for mild to moderate outer ear infections and inflammation, otherwise known as ‘swimmer’s ear’ or ‘otitis externa’. Otomize contains three active ingredients that work in different ways to target inflammation and fight infection at the source.

This product is suitable for children, adults and the elderly over the age of 2 years; however, it can only be prescribed online for adults aged 18 years and over. With daily use, symptoms are quickly soothed leaving your ears feeling more comfortable within 7 days.

If you have not yet been diagnosed with an outer ear infection you should discuss your symptoms with a doctor before using this treatment.

    How does Otomize work?

Otomize is used to treat outer ear infections by reducing inflammation and fighting infection. This is achieved through the action of three active ingredients:

    • Dexamethasone: a corticosteroid. It works by preventing your immune system from producing the chemicals that cause inflammation.
    • Neomycin sulphate: a broad-spectrum antibiotic. It fights infection by stopping bacteria from producing proteins needed to reproduce.
    • Acetic acid: an antibacterial agent that creates an acidic environment that bacteria cannot survive in.

These three ingredients relieve the unpleasant symptoms of ear infections, such as pain, swelling and redness, whilst simultaneously helping your body to eradicate the bacteria that is responsible for the infection.

Can Otomize Ear Spray treat blocked ear wax?

Otomize spray is used to treat inflammation and infection of the outer part of the ear canal. Although conditions such as swimmer’s ear can share symptoms of ear wax blockages such as muffled hearing, you need a treatment that will break down your blocked ear wax more effectively such as olive oil drops.

Can Otomize Ear Spray relieve glue ear?

Glue ear is where the empty middle part of the ear canal fills up with fluid. This can cause temporary hearing loss. Unfortunately, ear drops and decongestants aren’t usually very effective unless there are signs of infection. Glue ear usually clears up within 3 months but if symptoms persist it’s best to speak to your GP for further advice.

How does Otomize Ear Spray help swimmers?

Swimmers ear (otitis externa) is an outer ear infection common in children. It gets the name as it’s typically caused by water that’s stayed in the outer ear canal for long periods of time — something that can occur for regular swimmers. This moisture provides a breeding ground for bacteria and infections.

Otomize Ear Spray can treat the infection but long-term protection is needed to prevent the condition from returning. Wearing a swimming cap and drying your ears thoroughly can help.

  • How to use Otomize

Otomize Spray is for use on the external ear only.

Spray the affected ear or ears with 1 spray, 3 times a day until your symptoms have cleared and for 48 hours after.

    • Shake the bottle well before each use
    • Pump several times until you get a measured spray
    • Place the nozzle into the affected ear
    • Spray once

How long does Otomize take to work?

If you apply Otomize to the affected ear 3 times daily, your symptoms should clear up within a week. If your symptoms have not cleared within 7 days, you should discuss your symptoms and treatment options with a doctor. Please apply this product as you have been directed and take the time to read the Patient Information Leaflet before use.

  • Otomize side effects

As with all medications, Otomize can cause side effects, although not everyone will experience them.

The following side effects are the most widely reported:

    • Pins and needles
    • Skin irritation or rashes
    • Blurred vision

If you experience any of the mentioned side effects, or any others that are not listed, including allergic reactions, you should stop using this spray and seek medical advice.

It is normal to experience some minor burning and stinging after first applying the treatment. This is not usually a cause for concern and will fade as you adjust to the medicine. However, if it does not fade, stop treatment and consult a doctor.

Please ensure that you have read the Patient Information Leaflet before use.

  • Otomize warnings

Before using Otomize Ear Spray, please ensure that you have read all the information detailed in the Patient Information Leaflet.

You should not use this medication if you have grommets fitted or a perforated eardrum.

Speak to a doctor before use if you have a mitochondrial disease or you have an open wound or damaged skin in the affected ear. Excessive use of this product may cause hearing loss or deafness.

You should not use this treatment more than three times a year. If you find you are regularly suffering from ear infections, you should consult your doctor as there may be an underlying cause.
