How Do Cetraxal Plus Ear Drops Work?
Cetraxal Plus ear drops contain two main active ingredients: ciprofloxacin and fluocinolone. Ciprofloxacin is an antibiotic that works to kill the bacteria causing your infection. Fluocinolone is an anti-inflammatory that’s very effective at reducing the inflammation and discomfort commonly associated with ear infections.
This dual formulation means Cetraxal Plus targets the root cause of the infection and the swelling and pain it can cause. The drops are applied directly to the ear, allowing them to get to work fighting the infection straight away.
How To Use Cetraxal Plus
Cetraxal Plus ear drops should be administered directly into your ear canal. Each dose of Cetraxal Plus comes in its own single-use container. Usually, your doctor will tell you to apply two doses of Cetraxal Plus per day for seven days.
Before applying Cetraxal Plus, you – or the person applying the drops for you – should wash your hands and then gently clean any discharge that can be easily removed from the outer ear. Next, take a single-dose container of Cetraxal Plus from the pack and warm it in your hands for a minute or two. Remove the cap, tilt your head to the side and squeeze the contents of the container into the ear.
Keep your head tilted for a few minutes after applying the drops to help them reach the affected area.
Ingredients
The main active ingredients in Cetraxal Plus ear drops are ciprofloxacin, in the form of ciprofloxacin hydrochloride, and fluocinolone acetonide. Each millilitre (ml) of Cetraxal Plus contains 3mg of ciprofloxacin (as hydrochloride) and 0.25mg of fluocinolone acetonide. This means that each single-dose container (0.25ml) delivers 0.75mg of ciprofloxacin and 0.0625 mg of fluocinolone acetonide.
The other ingredients in the drops include polysorbate 80, glycerin, povidone and purified water.
Side Effects
In most cases, Cetraxal Plus is well tolerated. However, like all medicines, it could cause some side effects. The most common (affecting up to one in 10 people) are discomfort, pain and itching in the ear and an abnormal taste in the mouth.
Around one in 100 people may experience ringing, tingling, redness or congestion in the ear, or reduced hearing, fungal infection or tympanic membrane disorder. You may also feel more irritable when taking the ear drops and could experience dizziness, flushing, vomiting or fatigue.
Warnings
You shouldn’t use Cetraxal Plus if you’re allergic to any of the ingredients it contains. You should also avoid the medication if you have an infection caused by a virus or fungus rather than bacteria.
Cetraxal Plus should not be used with perforated eardrums or grommets unless it has been specifically prescribed by your doctor.
If you develop any allergic symptoms during treatment (such as hives, a skin rash or sudden swelling in your face, throat or eyelids), stop using the drops immediately and speak to your doctor.

What Is Otitis Externa And How Does Cetraxal Plus Help?
Otitis externa is inflammation of the ear canal. It’s also known as swimmer’s ear. If you have otitis externa, you may have pain and swelling in your ear canal, itching and irritation in and around your ear, and a feeling of pressure or fullness inside your ear. You could also have decreased hearing and find it very painful to move your outer ear or your jaw.
Cetraxal Plus helps otitis externa by killing the bacteria causing the infection and reducing the swelling and discomfort in your ear canal.
How Do I Know If I Have A Bacterial Ear Infection?
Ear infections can be caused by bacteria, fungus or a virus. Cetraxal Plus is only effective against infections caused by bacteria.
In general, bacterial ear infections tend to be more painful and last longer than viral infections. If you have a bacterial infection, you may also feel lethargic or have a high fever (temperature). Often, viral infections resolve on their own within a week, while bacterial infections persist for longer and require antibiotics.
Fungal infections can often be diagnosed with a visual exam, though diagnosis may need to be confirmed through laboratory testing.
How Long Does Cetraxal Plus Take To Work?
If you’ve been prescribed Cetraxal Plus to treat an ear infection, you should begin to notice relief from the pain and discomfort within a few days.
However, even if your symptoms disappear completely, it’s essential that you complete your full course of Cetraxal Plus. This will help to ensure your infection is completely cleared and also prevents bacteria becoming resistant to antibiotics.
Can Cetraxal Plus Treat Glue Ear?
Glue ear is a condition where the middle part of the ear canal fills up with fluid. This may cause temporary hearing loss.
Though glue ear can follow an ear infection, it’s not typically a symptom of an active infection. This means that Cetraxal Plus isn’t effective in treating glue ear, unless there are signs of a bacterial infection present.
Can Cetraxal Plus Be Used For Blocked Ear Wax?
Cetraxal Plus is not designed to treat earwax blockages and won’t help to ease the symptoms of a blockage unless you also have a bacterial infection.
You may be able to clear your blockage using a wax-softening treatment or by flushing your ear with warm saline solution. If you can’t clear your blockage, you may need to book an appointment with your doctor.
What Should I Do If I Miss A Dose Of Cetraxal Plus?
Usually, your doctor will tell you to take two doses of Cetraxal Plus per day. If you forget a dose of the medication, take it as soon as you remember.
However, if it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your course of Cetraxal Plus as normal. Never take two doses at the same time as this could increase your chances of experiencing side effects.
Can I Use Cetraxal Plus If I Have A Perforated Eardrum?
If you have a perforated eardrum (a condition that’s often accompanied by severe pain, hearing loss, ringing in the ears, dizziness and nausea) you shouldn’t use Cetraxal Plus unless the drops have been specifically prescribed by your doctor.
You may also need to avoid the medication if you have grommets - small tubes that are often used to treat glue ear.
Are There Any Lifestyle Restrictions While Using Cetraxal Plus?
Your ears should be kept as clean and dry as possible when using Cetraxal Plus. Try to avoid getting soap or shampoo in your ears and don’t use cotton buds to clean them during treatment.
You should also avoid swimming as this can make your ear very wet and could make your infection worse.
What Should I Do If My Symptoms Don't Improve With Cetraxal Plus?
If you’ve completed your course of Cetraxal Plus and your symptoms haven’t improved, you should speak to a doctor about alternative treatment options. Your doctor may recommend other medications or may run tests to determine the exact cause of your infection.
