Bisoprolol is a daily tablet used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) and can also be used for other conditions such as angina and heart failure. Bisoprolol belongs to a group of medicines called beta-blockers. Beta-blockers work to reduce the heart’s workload, which helps to prevent problems occurring due to over-activity. In treating cardiovascular conditions, Bisoprolol is preferable to non-selective beta-blockers like Propranolol, because it specifically targets the heart. As a result, it does not have the same side effects on the nervous system.

It can sometimes be difficult to know whether or not you suffer from hypertension. This is because the condition rarely presents with noticeable symptoms. High blood pressure can be hereditary, or it can develop as a result of poor lifestyle choices. All adults over the age of 40 are advised to have their blood pressure checked at least once every five years by their doctor. If hypertension is left untreated, it can lead to serious complications, resulting in heart disease, heart attack, stroke, and kidney failure. Bisoprolol, like other hypertension treatments, will not cure high blood pressure. However, if used appropriately, it will effectively help manage the condition. Bisoprolol may be prescribed on its own or alongside other hypertension medicines.

Hypertension should not be solely controlled using medicine. Instead, treatments, such as bisoprolol, should be used to supplement an active, well-balanced lifestyle. There are a number of healthy choices you can make, which will greatly reduce the strain on your heart. These choices include:

  • Eating a low-fat diet that is rich in fibre, fruit and vegetables.
  • Reducing the amount of sodium (salt) in your diet.
  • Exercising regularly (30 minutes of moderate aerobic activity per day).
  • If applicable, quit smoking.
  • If you consume moderate to high levels of alcohol, reduce the amount you drink.

Beta-blockers work by inhibiting the activity of adrenaline and other similar chemicals that the body releases in response to stress and other kinds of stimulation. Adrenaline interacts with beta-receptor cells in the walls of blood vessels, which narrows the blood vessels and makes the heart work harder. Bisoprolol blocks adrenaline from stimulating beta-receptors, allowing the heart to work more efficiently.

Swallow the tablet whole with a sip of water. Bisoprolol can be taken either with or without food, but should be taken at a similar time each day.

If, for any reason, you forget to take a tablet, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is less than 8 hours from when you will take your next tablet, skip the dose that you missed. Never double your dose to compensate for a dose that you have missed.

Continue taking Bisoprolol until your doctor advises that you stop, even if you feel healthy.

Alcohol does not directly interact with this medicine; however, you should avoid drinking heavily because the combination may lower your blood pressure excessively.

Not everyone will experience side effects when they take Bisoprolol, however, if you do they can include:

Slow heartbeat, reduced circulation to extremities, nausea, breathlessness, low blood pressure, digestive problems (including nausea, diarrhoea, constipation), fatigue, headache, dizziness
