About Lyclear 5% Dermal Cream
Lyclear is a trusted treatment for scabies and crab lice that is suitable for use by both adults and children. Lyclear is the branded version of permethrin 5% cream. Permethrin is a synthetic insecticide that effectively eliminates parasitic infestations by affecting the nervous systems of mites and their eggs so that they are destroyed.
While it is highly effective in getting rid of mites and lice, its formulation is gentle enough for most skin types.
How Does Lyclear Cream Work?
The active ingredient of Lyclear 5% Cream is permethrin. This belongs to a family of insecticides called pyrethroids. These work by interacting with the nervous systems of mites, lice and their eggs, paralysing and killing them.
Permethrin works on contact with parasites, eliminating them and stopping the spread of infestation while relieving symptoms.
How To Use Lyclear Dermal Cream
For adults and children over two years old, apply a thin layer of Lyclear Dermal Cream to your skin. Make sure that your skin has been thoroughly washed, dried and left to cool before applying. Do not take a hot shower or bath immediately before you administer the product to your skin.
For scabies, your whole body should be treated, although your scalp and face can usually be spared unless they are directly affected by scabies (itch mites). Be careful to include the skin between your fingers and toes, beneath your fingernails, your wrists, elbows, armpits, external genitalia and buttocks.
Leave for 8-12 hours (overnight) before washing off with soap and warm water.
For crab lice, focus on the affected areas including pubic hair, armpit hair or facial hair (beards and moustaches) and leave for 24 hours before washing off with soap and warm water.
Ingredients
The active ingredient of Lyclear 5% Dermal Cream is permethrin (5% w/w).
Other inactive ingredients include coconut oil, glyceryl monostearate, macrogol cetyl ether, cetomacrogol 1000, isopropyl myristate, lanolin alcohols/liquid paraffin mixture, butylated hydroxytoluene, glycerol, formaldehyde solution, carbomer, sodium hydroxide and purified water.
These inactive ingredients help to give the cream its consistency while also soothing itching and irritation.
Side Effects
Like all medications, Lyclear Cream has some risk of side effects. These are generally mild and temporary, and not everyone will experience them.
Some people may find they have irritation in the form of a slight stinging or burning sensation, redness, or rashes. You may experience unusual sensations including tingling or prickling feeling (paraesthesia) on their skin.
Itching and rashes (post scabies eczema) may continue for up to four weeks after treatment. This is a normal reaction to dead mites.
In some rare cases, people using Lyclear Cream may experience headaches, skin lesions or inflammation of the hair follicles.

Warnings

Yes, Lyclear is suitable for children from two years of age and upwards. Application for children younger than this should only be carried out under medical supervision.
Lyclear should be applied to the child's whole body, including the palms of their hands, soles of their feet, neck, face, ears, and scalp. Avoid contact with the area around the eyes to avoid irritation of the mucous membranes, and avoid the skin around the mouth to prevent the risk of the cream being licked off.

Scabies can be transmitted by any kind of skin-on-skin contact. Therefore, it is vital to treat every member of the household at the same time to prevent reinfestation– even if not everyone in the household shows symptoms.
How Do I Apply Lyclear 5% Dermal Cream Correctly?
Make sure your skin has been thoroughly cleaned and dried but is also cool before application. Avoid taking a hot shower or bath immediately before applying.
Spread a thin layer to the affected areas in the case of crab lice or the whole body in the case of scabies. Be sure to access hard to reach areas including the skin between fingers and toes, skin underneath fingernails, wrists, elbows, armpits, genitals and buttocks.
Leave for 8-12 hours in scabies cases and 24 hours in cases of crab lice before washing with warm water and soap.
What Should I Do About Bedding And Clothing?
Mites, lice and eggs can live in clothing, bedding and towels. Therefore, these should be washed at a high temperature (60°C or above) to eliminate the risk of reinfestation. Any items that cannot be washed should be sealed in plastic bags and left for several days.
Will Lyclear 5% Dermal Cream Stop The Itching Immediately?
Lyclear 5% Dermal Cream kills parasites on contact. In most cases, itching will quickly subside. However, some may find that itching persists for up to four weeks after treatment. This is not necessarily a sign of reinfestation. It is simply the skin's reaction to dead mites.
Itching can be treated with an over-the-counter emollient such as E45 or Eurax cream.
