Phenoxymethylpenicillin (Pen V) Summary

About Phenoxymethylpenicillin Tablets For Sore Throats

Phenoxymethylpenicillin is an antibiotic that’s commonly used to treat bacterial throat infections. It’s a type of penicillin and works by killing the bacteria that are causing your sore throat.

If you’re taking Phenoxymethylpenicillin, you could notice improvements in your symptoms within just a day or two of starting treatment, though it may take up to 10 days for your infection to completely clear.

How Does Pen V Work?

Phenoxymethylpenicillin, also known as Pen V, works by attacking the bacteria that’s infecting your throat. The antibiotic disrupts the cell wall of the bacteria, killing it and clearing the infection. Typically, Phenoxymethylpenicillin takes around seven to 10 days to completely get rid of the bacteria causing your sore throat.

How To Take Phenoxymethylpenicillin For Sore Throats

The usual dose of Phenoxymethylpenicillin is two 250mg tablets, taken four times per day, for a total dose of 2000mg in any 24hour period. Generally, you’ll need to take the medication for seven days, though you should always follow your doctor’s instructions.

Phenoxymethylpenicillin should be taken on an empty stomach around 30 minutes before you eat. Take your tablets with a glass of water to ensure they’re easy to swallow.

Ingredients

Phenoxymethylpenicillin is the active ingredient in the medication. Each tablet contains 250mg of Phenoxymethylpenicillin (as Phenoxymethylpenicillin Potassium).

The other ingredients in the tablets are calcium hydrogen phosphate dihydrate, maize starch, cellulose, microcrystalline (E460) and magnesium stearate (E572).

The film coating on the tablets contains butylated methacrylate, macrogol 6000, sodium laurylsulfate (E487), stearic acid (E570), and titanium dioxide (E171).

Side Effects

Phenoxymethylpenicillin is generally well tolerated and not everyone who takes the medication will experience side effects. If you do have adverse symptoms, they’re likely to be mild and temporary.

The most common side effects of Phenoxymethylpenicillin are nausea and diarrhoea. If you experience a more severe symptom, such as a persistent upset stomach, swelling of your tongue or mouth, a black, hairy tongue or jaundice, tell your doctor as soon as possible.

If you have an allergic reaction to Phenoxymethylpenicillin – which is characterised by symptoms such as shortness of breath, swelling of your lips, face or tongue, or peeling or blistering of the skin – stop taking the medication and seek immediate medical advice.

Warnings

Do not take Phenoxymethylpenicillin if you know you’re allergic to any of the ingredients it contains. You should also tell your doctor if you suffer from kidney or liver problems, a blood disorder or have a tendency to develop hay fever or eczema.

As each tablet of Phenoxymethylpenicillin contains 28mg of potassium, it’s important to tell your doctor if you’re on a low potassium diet. You should also avoid the medication if you’re already taking other antibiotics.

Phenoxymethylpenicillin could interact with some other medications including warfarin, methotrexate and gout medicines. It may also interact with the typhoid vaccine, so make sure you tell your doctor if you’re due to get vaccinated.

For the full list of side effects please see the information leaflet provided with your medicine.
