Doxycycline is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that’s used to treat acne. It’s also used as a treatment for chest infections, dental infections and some sexually transmitted infections (STIs), as well as skin issues such as rosacea (persistent redness of the skin).

Doxycycline is most commonly prescribed as a treatment for moderate to severe acne. The antibiotic is often recommended when other acne treatments have been ineffective. It works by killing the bacteria on your skin which could cause an infection to form in your pores. It may also reduce the free fatty acids in sebum, the oily substance naturally produced by your skin which can clog pores.

Another benefit of Doxycycline is that it works to reduce inflammation caused by acne. This may help your skin feel more comfortable and could minimise visible signs of acne.

If you’re prescribed Doxycycline for acne, you may begin to notice improvements in your condition after around two weeks. However, it could take up to 12 weeks to see any significant results.

Doxycycline For Acne Summary

About Doxycycline For Acne

Doxycycline is a prescription-only treatment for acne. It’s an antibiotic that’s taken orally, and generally comes in 50mg or 100mg capsules.

As well as acne, Doxycycline can also be used to treat a number of other infections including chest infections, dental infections and some sexually transmitted diseases.

How Does Doxycycline For Acne Work?

Doxycycline fights acne in two ways. Firstly, it kills the bacteria that can infect your pores and cause acne to appear. It also reduces the inflammation that’s commonly associated with moderate to severe acne.

Doxycycline is often combined with topical acne treatments to maximise its results. Your doctor can advise you on which other medications may be most effective for you.

How To Take Doxycycline For Acne

The dosage of Doxycycline you’re prescribed for acne will depend on a number of factors including your current health and the severity of your condition. The usual dose is 100mg to 200mg taken once or twice per day.

If you take Doxycycline on an empty stomach, you may find you feel sick afterwards. Taking the medication with food, or just after you eat, could help to prevent any nausea. Standing upright, and taking your capsule with water, may minimise irritation to your food pipe or stomach. If possible, avoid lying down for at least 30 minutes after taking Doxycycline.

Typically, Doxycycline is prescribed for three to six months. Always follow your doctor’s instructions and make sure you complete the full course of medication, even if your symptoms improve.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in Doxycycline is doxycycline hyclate. The capsules also contain a number of inactive ingredients including hypromellose, sodium lauryl sulphate, microcrystalline cellulose and magnesium stearate. The capsule shell contains gelatin and titanium dioxide (E171).

Doxycycline 100mg capsules also contain Brilliant Blue (E133) and Iron Oxide Yellow (E172). This gives them a distinctive green colour and makes it easy to tell them apart from 50mg capsules.

Side Effects

Doxycycline could cause some side effects. The most common, affecting up to one in 10 people, is nausea. Around one in 100 people taking Doxycycline experience heartburn and vaginal infection, while around one in 1,000 report anxiety, difficulty swallowing, skin reddening, bowel inflammation and yellowing of the skin. You may also experience headaches and find your skin is more sensitive to the sun.

If you have sudden wheezing, difficulty breathing, chest pain or problems with your vision, seek medication attention straight away. You should also speak to a doctor or pharmacist if you’re concerned about any of the side effects you experience while taking Doxycycline.

Warnings

Doxycycline does interact with some other medications. Medicines like antacids (indigestion remedies), medicines used to control epilepsy, and barbiturates (used to control epilepsy or as a sedative) could make Doxycycline less effective.

What’s more, Doxycycline may impact the action of blood clotting medication, oral contraceptives, bismuth salts and ciclosporin.

If you take any of these medications, or any other prescription drugs, make sure you tell your doctor during your consultation.

Because Doxycycline could make your skin more sensitive to UV light, you should avoid going out in strong sun while taking the medication.

Doxycycline is not suitable for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Always complete your full course of Doxycycline. Stopping treatment early could lead to reinfection and may contribute to bacteria becoming resistant to treatment.

Please refer to the Patient Information Leaflet for a full list of warnings. Always inform your doctor or pharmacist of any medications you are currently taking before starting Doxycycline.
