Oxytetracycline Tablets Summary

About Oxytetracycline Tablets

Acne and rosacea can really take a toll on your confidence, but oxytetracycline can help keep things under control. It’s a broad-spectrum antibiotic that’s commonly prescribed for persistent or cystic acne and rosacea. By targeting the bacteria that cause these skin problems, it helps reduce inflammation and gives your skin the chance to heal.

Available in 250mg tablets, oxytetracycline is most often used to treat skin conditions but can also be prescribed for a range of other infections.

How Do Oxytetracycline 250mg Tablets Work?

Oxytetracycline works by targeting the bacteria responsible for acne, stopping them from producing the proteins they need to grow and reproduce.

You take it orally and it’s absorbed into your bloodstream where it’s carried to your sebaceous glands – the tiny glands in your skin that make oil, which are mostly found on your face, back, chest, and scalp. Basically, these are the places where you’re most likely to get spots. Oxytetracycline helps reduce inflammation and prevents new acne lesions.

How To Take/Use Oxytetracycline 250mg Tablets

Food will affect how well your body absorbs oxytetracycline so you must take it on an empty stomach, either one hour before or two hours after eating.

The recommended dose is two tablets twice a day for adults aged 18-65, and it’s recommended that you take them with a glass of water. You should also avoid drinking milk or taking any indigestion remedies for two hours before or after, and remember to space your doses evenly throughout your day.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in each tablet is oxytetracycline 250mg.

The tablets also contain the following inactive ingredients - maize starch, pregelatinated maize starch, povidone, sodium starch glycolate, sodium lauryl sulphate, magnesium stearate, titanium dioxide (E171), quinoline yellow (E104), hydroxypropyl cellulose (E463), sunset yellow (E110), hypromellose, ethylcellulose and dibutyl phthalate.

Always check the ingredients first before you start treatment to make sure they’re suitable for your diet.

Side Effects

As with any medicine, you may experience some unwanted side effects while taking oxytetracycline. Not everyone gets them, but the most common side effects include feeling sick or suffering from an upset tummy, diarrhoea, trouble swallowing and headaches. You may also develop a rash or notice your skin is more sensitive to sunlight during treatment.

Rare side effects include allergic reactions, changes in liver or kidney function such as pain in your stomach, jaundice or difficulty passing urine, or inflammation of the pancreas (severe abdominal pain, fever, swollen stomach, nausea and vomiting).

If you experience any side effects, even ones not listed, speak to our medical team straight away.

Warnings

Oxytetracycline isn’t suitable for everyone. It shouldn’t be taken if you’re pregnant, breastfeeding or under 12 years old. If you have kidney or liver problems, diabetes, lupus or myasthenia gravis you should let our healthcare professionals know during your consultation.

Oxytetracycline may interact with other medications including penicillin-based antibiotics, antacids and supplements containing magnesium, iron and zinc, which can affect how well it works. Always complete the consultation fully and honestly so we can make sure it’s the right treatment for you.
