Benylin Dry Coughs Original is a cough medicine that assists in reducing the discomfort of a bad cough. By reducing the urge to cough, this medicine provides relief to people suffering from particularly rough coughing fits.

There are three active ingredients contained within Benylin Dry Coughs Original. These are diphenhydramine, levomenthol, and dextromethorphan.

Diphenhydramine is a sedating antihistamine. It has a sedating effect, and this drowsiness can help reduce coughing impulses. Histamine is a naturally occurring chemical in the body which, when bonded to receptors, causes the secretion of nasal mucus. As an antihistamine, Diphenhydramine prevents histamine from binding to receptors. This has the effect of reducing nasal mucus, which will dry up a runny nose, and reduce the dripping of nasal mucus into the back of the throat where it can cause irritation that leads to coughing.

Levomenthol acts as a decongestant and has a cooling effect. This can soothe the discomfort created by a cough and unblock nasal passages.

Coughing is a reflex designed to clear particles such as mucus or dust from the airways. Keeping the airways clear is important, but sometimes when ill the cough reflex can become overstimulated and coughing that has no purpose will occur. Dextromethorphan is a suppressant that reduces the occurrences of these coughs. Dextromethorphan works by reducing nerve signals from the coughing centre of the brain to the muscles that are used for coughing. This can reduce instances of coughing for no reason, when there is a cough reflex but no phlegm to cough up.

This combination of active ingredients will thus provide relief to those suffering from irritating coughs. Additionally, the sedative effect of diphenhydramine combined with the soothing relief can assist in achieving uninterrupted sleep.
