What is Robitussin Dry Cough Medicine and what is it used for?
Robitussin dry cough 250ml medicine will help to relieve persistent dry or tickly coughs by controlling the cough reflex and providing a soothing effect.
Robitussin Dry cough medicine is suitable for adults and children over the age of 12 years to soothe dry, irritating coughs. It should be taken as directed. If you are experiencing any kind of illness that is causing you to cough you must drink plenty of water to remain hydrated. If you are experiencing pain or a fever alongside your cough it is safe to take pain killers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen alongside Robitussin.
How does Robitussin Dry Cough Medicine work?
The active ingredient in Robitussin Dry Cough medicine is dextromethorphan, which belongs to a group of medicines called cough suppressants. It works by providing effective relief from persistent dry, irritating coughs. The formula is non-drowsy, so can be administered during the day. The liquid format is easy to administer.
Alternatives to Robitussin Dry Cough Medicine
Experiencing coughs and colds at any time of the year is incredibly common with children sometimes experiencing colds up to 8 times a year. There is therefore plenty of choices when it comes to treating an irritating cough and it is often down to personal preference as to what treatment you prefer. Often cold and flu treatments also contain decongestants and painkillers so it is important to read the product descriptions of each treatment carefully.

- Sudafed Decongestant Tablets
- Actifed Tablets
If you have been taking any cold and flu treatment for 5 days and have not noticed an improvement to your cough or your condition has worsened you should speak to a doctor for advice.
Robitussin Dry Cough Medicine dosage
This product is for oral use only. Robitussin is NOT suitable for children under the age of 12.
Adults, the elderly and children over the age of 12: take 10ml up to 4 times daily, as required.
Robitussin Dry Cough Medicine ingredients
Active ingredients: Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide Ph Eur 7.5mg
Other ingredients: Maltitol, Sorbitol, Glycerol, Sodium Cyclamate, Acesulfame Potassium, Sodium Benzoate E211, Disodium Edetate, Amaranth E123, Caramel E150, Ethanol (96%) BP 2.5 v/v.
Robitussin Dry Cough Medicine side effects
Like all medicines, Robitussin Dry Cough Medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody will experience them. If you experience any of the following, discontinue using this product and seek advice from your doctor:
- Allergic reactions such as, itchy skin or rashes, difficulty breathing, faster heart rate or swelling of the face or throat
- Stomach upset
- Dizziness, drowsiness mental confusion
If you are concerned about any side effects you should speak to a doctor or pharmacist as soon as possible for advice.
Robitussin Dry Cough Medicine warnings
Do not take Robitussin Dry Cough if any of the following apply to you:
- Are taking or have taken in the last 14 days, a prescription monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) used to treat depression and Parkinson’s disease
- Are currently taking or have taken in the last 14 days, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) used to treat depression and anxiety
- Are currently taking or have taken in the last 14 days, any other medication for depression, psychiatric or emotional conditions or Parkinson’s disease
Speak to a doctor or pharmacist before taking this medication if any of the following apply to you:
- You have asthma
- You have kidney or liver problems
- You have a persistent cough or a cough with excessive secretions
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding
This medicine contains dextromethorphan which can cause dependency, therefore it should be used with care. Caution is advised if this product is to be used by an adolescent or those who have had a drug dependency in the past. Treatment should be short in duration. This medicine can affect your ability to drive, as it may make you sleepy or dizzy. Do NOT drive or operate machinery when using this product until you know how it affects you.
Robitussin Dry Cough Medicine and other medicines
Robitussin should not be used at the same time as taking any other medicines for coughs or colds, as they could contain the same active ingredients and lead to you exceeding the daily recommendation. Also, cough expectorants can produce an opposite reaction so advice should always be taken from your doctor or a pharmacist.
