About Tranexamic Acid Tablets

Tranexamic Acid tablets are a prescription medication designed to treat or prevent short-term bleeding. They make blood clots more stable and stop them from breaking down too quickly, reducing heavy bleeding and giving your body more time to heal. Each tablet contains 500mg of tranexamic acid, which is the active ingredient. How many you take varies depending on why you’ve been prescribed them, so you should always follow your clinician’s advice.

How Does Tranexamic Acid Work?

Tranexamic Acid works by helping your body create more stable blood clots, which stop ongoing bleeding and help prevent further blood loss. When you have an injury, your body forms clots to stop the bleeding. Sometimes, the clots can dissolve too fast, meaning you bleed for longer or more heavily. Tranexamic Acid stops the blood clots from breaking down as quickly, giving your body more time to heal and reducing the amount of unwanted bleeding you experience.

How To Take Tranexamic Acid

Your prescriber will tell you how many tablets to take and when to take them. Typically, you’ll take two or three tablets two to three times a day. The exact dose that you’ve been prescribed will depend on why you’re taking Tranexamic Acid. Always take your medication with a glass of cold water, and never crush or chew the tablets. You should swallow them whole. Always follow your clinician’s instructions, and reach out if you need support.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in this medication is tranexamic acid. Each tablet contains 500mg tranexamic acid. The other ingredients in the tablet core include cellulose microcrystalline, povidone (K 90), croscarmellose sodium, silica colloidal anhydrous, talc, and magnesium stearate. The film coating is made of methacrylate polymers, titanium dioxide (E171), talc, magnesium stearate, and macrogol (8000).

Side Effects

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although very few people will experience them. This is because there are no known common side effects associated with Tranexamic Acid 500mg Tablets.

However, you must stop taking this medicine and call 999 or go straight to the hospital if you experience any of the following symptoms:

  • Pain or a feeling of tightness in your chest
  • Trouble breathing
  • Unusual swelling of your mouth, face, lips, tongue or throat
  • Fainting

To check any rarer side effects, please consult the Patient Information Leaflet.

Can I Take Tranexamic Acid With Other Medicine?

Tranexamic Acid is safe to take alongside most other medications, but you should always consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking it with any other treatment.

You should talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you're taking the combined pill and plan on using Tranexamic Acid alongside it, as this can lead to a tiny increase in the risk of developing a blood clot.
