What are Sominex tablets?
Sominex tablets can be taken by adults and children over the age of 16 years for up to 7 days consecutively. They contain the active ingredient promethazine hydrochloride, which is an antihistamine that causes drowsiness.
Sominex is effective as a sleeping aid to help combat short term sleep disturbance caused by changes to your normal routine making it difficult for you to fall asleep and to stay asleep.
What is Sominex used for?
Sominex is a sleep aid that primarily used to induce drowsiness in those that are suffering from short term sleep disturbances or insomnia.
Taking Sominex around 20 minutes before you would normally go to bed, can help you to fall asleep more quickly and then stay asleep throughout the night.
Sominex contains the antihistamine, promethazine, which like other antihistamines also helps to reduce symptoms of mild allergies such as itchy, watery eyes, itchy skin and runny noses.
How does Sominex work?
Sominex contains Promethazine, which is an antihistamine which has a sedative effect that causes drowsiness and aids sleep.
Histamines are the chemicals that are produced by the body in response to something you are allergic to. Promethazine works by blocking histamine receptors in your brain which reduces the impact of an allergic reaction. It is this process that causes your brain and body to relax, making you feel tired and ready to sleep.
Does Sominex work?
To get the most benefit from taking Sominex you should take a tablet around 20 mins before you plan to go to bed or take a tablet up to 1 hour after going to bed if you are unable to fall asleep naturally.
Sominex normally will take around 30 minutes to start to work and the effects can last up to 12 hours.
You should only take Sominex for a maximum of 7 days. If you are continuing to be affected by sleeplessness after 7 days or are having repeated episodes you should speak to a pharmacist or doctor for advice.
Sominex or Nytol
Both Sominex and Nytol use different antihistamines that have a sedative effect to help induce sleep in people that are suffering short term sleep disturbances.
Sominex contains the antihistamine promethazine whereas Nytol contains diphenhydramine. Both products work in the same way and may cause similar side effects. Some individuals may find that one of the products works better for them than the other.
You can buy both Sominex and Nytol online at The Independent Pharmacy, without the need for a prescription. However if you are continuing to have difficulties getting a good night's sleep after a week you should speak to a pharmacist or doctor for advice.
Is Sominex addictive?
Sominex is unlikely to cause addiction, however it is only recommended that you take Sominex for up to 7 days. Although you are unlikely to become addicted to Sominex, you can become reliant on sleep aids for a good night's sleep. If you are relying on this product to help you sleep after 7 days you must speak to a pharmacist or doctor for advice.
Sominex and alcohol
You should not drink alcohol when taking Sominex as this significantly increases the likeliness of you experiencing side effects and can boost the severity if they do occur.
