Buying Sildenafil Tablets - What You Need To Know

What is Sildenafil?

Sildenafil is an oral medication that is routinely prescribed to treat erectile dysfunction. It is better known as being sold under the brand name, Viagra. However, as a generic rather than branded medication, it is usually much more affordable than its branded alternatives.

Erectile dysfunction occurs when it becomes difficult to get or maintain an erection that is rigid enough for sexual penetration. This can happen for many reasons, but health and lifestyle factors such as obesity, high blood pressure, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption and stress often contribute to episodes of erectile dysfunction.

Erectile dysfunction can also be caused by some medications like antidepressants, antihistamines, chemotherapy drugs and beta-blockers.

Sildenafil is also known as: Aronix, Liberize, Niaptra, Revatio, Grandipam, Viagra and others.

How Does Sildenafil Work?

To understand how sildenafil works, it helps to understand what happens when you get an erection. When you become sexually aroused, your brain sends signals to the muscles in your penis to relax. It does this by producing a chemical called cGMP. When this happens, the blood vessels in your penis fill with blood, causing it to get bigger and firmer and move away from the body. When you are no longer sexually aroused, or after ejaculation, the blood flows back out of the penis, causing it to soften again. For men with erectile dysfunction, it’s often the breakdown of cGMP by an enzyme called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) that leads to their inability to get or keep an erection.

Sildenafil works by blocking the action of this enzyme, enabling the blood vessels of the penis to relax and fill with blood, so that you may achieve an erection that’s firm enough for sexual satisfaction.

Sildenafil is also sometimes prescribed to treat a type of high blood pressure called pulmonary hypertension.

Important information: Sildenafil alone can’t cause an erection; you still need to be sexually aroused for it to work.

Sildenafil Doses

Sildenafil is available in different strengths. These range from 25mg to 100mg.

For erectile dysfunction, the usual recommended dose is 50mg. However, it can be increased to 100mg or decreased to 25mg depending on how effective it is for you. For example, if you take a 50mg dose, but you still aren’t able to achieve an erection firm enough for sex, you may need to take 75mg or 100mg.

Do not take sildenafil more than once per day.

Who Can Take Sildenafil?

Most men over the age of 18 can take sildenafil. However, it’s not suitable for everyone. You shouldn’t take sildenafil without consulting your doctor first if you:

  • have a serious problem with your heart or liver
  • have ever had an allergic reaction to sildenafil
  • have ever had an allergic reaction to any other medication
  • are taking nitrates for chest pain (angina)
  • have recently had a stroke or heart attack
  • have a stomach ulcer
  • have low blood pressure
  • have a condition that affects your blood cells, such as sickle cell anaemia, leukaemia or multiple myeloma
  • have a problem with bleeding, such as haemophilia
  • have a deformity of your penis, or a curved penis (Peyronie’s disease)

Alternatives to Sildenafil

In recent years, a number of medications have been developed to treat erectile dysfunction. You may need to try a few to find the treatment that works best for you.

The most popular alternatives to Sildenafil are:

  • Cialis (sold generically as Tadalafil)
  • Vardenafil (originally branded as Levitra)
  • Spedra (also known as avanafil)

Sildenafil Vs Cialis

Cialis, or Tadalafil, is one of the best-known ED treatments on the market. The main benefit of Sildenafil over Cialis is that it works fast. When you take Sildenafil, you could achieve an erection in as little as 30 minutes, while Cialis takes up to two hours to become effective.

However, unlike Sildenafil, Cialis can be taken on an empty stomach and lasts up to 36 hours, compared to just four hours for Sildenafil.

Sildenafil Vs Vardenafil

Originally sold as Levitra, Vardenafil works in a similar way to Sildenafil. The main differences between these two medications are that Vardenafil lasts a little longer (up to five hours) and is less affected by food than Sildenafil. The main exception is grapefruit, which has been shown to significantly reduce the effects of both medications.

Sildenafil Vs Spedra

Spedra (known generically as avanafil and sold as Stendra in the US) can start to work faster than Sildenafil, in as little as 15 minutes. Unlike Sildenafil, Spedra is effective when taken with or without food and its effects last slightly longer, with most men benefitting from the medication for an average of six hours.

How to Take Sildenafil

Sildenafil is an oral medication that can be swallowed with or without water. While it usually takes between 30 and 60 minutes to start working, you can take it for up to four hours before you want to have sex, meaning that it doesn’t need to interrupt your activities before penetration takes place.

Top Tips for Taking Sildenafil

  • Swallow tablets whole with water
It’s best to take sildenafil on an empty stomach
Taking sildenafil with food may mean that it takes longer to work

I’ve Taken Too Much Sildenafil, What Should I Do?

Taking more than the recommended dose of sildenafil could cause a range of unpleasant effects including:

  • headaches
  • dizziness
  • indigestion
  • blocked nose
  • vision changes

Call Your Doctor Immediately if…

Serious side effects related to sildenafil are extremely rare. However, you could call 999 or speak to an emergency health professional immediately if you:

  • suddenly experience vision loss or severe change to your vision
  • have a seizure
  • have a painful erection
  • have an erection that lasts for longer than two hours
  • you experience any chest pain
  • you experience any symptoms of an allergic reaction, such as your lips, mouth or tongue becoming swollen, breathing difficulty or feeling very unwell

Each tablet also contains: microcrystalline cellulose, calcium hydrogen phosphate anhydrous, croscarmellose sodium, magnesium stearate, poly(vinyl alcohol), titanium dioxide (E171), macrogol 3350 & talc.

Sildenafil Warnings

Sildenafil tablets may not be suitable if any of the following apply:

  • You suffer from heart disease or heart rhythm problems
  • You have had a heart attack or stroke within the last six months
  • You have high or low blood pressure
  • You suffer from liver or kidney disease
  • You are a haemophiliac
  • You suffer from sickle cell anaemia or leukaemia
  • There is a physical deformity of the penis
  • You suffer from retinitis pigmentosa
  • You have a stomach ulcer.

If any of the above apply, it is important to let your doctor know so they can judge whether Sildenafil tablets will be safe for you to use.

Sildenafil tablets can lower the blood pressure. For most men, this isn’t a concern. However, this effect on blood pressure can be exaggerated if Sildenafil is taken with a nitrate drug, such as Isosorbide or Glyceryl Trinitrate (GTN). If taking nitrate drugs, then Sildenafil tablets should not be used. Sildenafil tablets should be used with caution if combined with alpha-blockers due to the potential hypotensive effects.

    Sildenafil: Side Effects and Risks

All medications can cause side effects, and sildenafil is no exception. However, this doesn’t mean you will definitely experience them. In fact, men who take sildenafil for erection problems are unlikely to experience any side effects at all since they only take this erectile dysfunction medication for a short time. Nevertheless, some of the most common sildenafil side effects to be aware of include:

    • headaches
    • nausea
    • hot flushes
    • indigestion
    • dizziness
    • stuffy nose

Important information: Grapefruit and grapefruit juice can interact with sildenafil by affecting the way that they are metabolised by your body. This can increase your risk of side effects and reduce the effectiveness of your erectile dysfunction medication.

Please see the Patient Information Leaflet for a full list of side effects and warnings.
