A new treatment for Erectile Dysfunction (ED), Spedra tablets can take effect as soon as 20 minutes after use. Spedra tablets can solve trouble achieving an erection and help maintain them for a window of 4-5 hours.

The Independent Pharmacy Online Doctor can dispense Spedra tablets, after a free consultation. To find out more about ED, take a look at our Online Doctor Erectile Dysfunction page.

The active ingredient of Spedra tablets is the drug avanafil. This is a new kind of PDE-5 inhibitors, which is a type of medicine that includes Cialis, Levitra and Viagra. Spedra works by promoting blood flow towards the penis, which results in a heightened ability to maintain erections. This blood flow will only occur during sexual stimulation, so Spedra does not allow you to skip the foreplay!

Spedra is one of the fastest solutions for ED available – it can take effect as soon as 20 minutes, and this effect can last for up to 4 or 5 hours.

Spedra 200mg tablets are the highest dosage available, for people who have tried lower dosages or other ED treatments without success. A Spedra 200mg tablet should be strong enough to treat almost all cases of ED. However, like all ED medication, there is a chance of little or no effect, particularly if it is one of the first times the medicine is being used. If a certain dose of Spedra isn't working, it is advised that you try it at least eight times before deciding to switch to another dose or medicine. If side effects such as headaches or flushing appear, and persist after several uses of the medicine, you might want to consider another treatment or a reduced dosage.

Spedra solves ED by dealing with the physical causes of a difficulty in achieving erections – reduced blood flow to the penis as a result of blocked or narrow arteries. ED can also be caused by psychological reasons, such as anxiety or depression. It is possible that Spedra can help in achieving an erection when ED is caused by psychological symptoms. In these cases, it is recommended that advice from a doctor or therapist is sought for a long term solution.

There are a number of Non-Prescription Alternatives for the treatment of Erectile Dysfunction such as;

  • Changes to diet (cutting down alcohol and fat consumption)
  • Stopping Smoking
  • Reducing Stress
  • Counselling
  • Vaccum Devices (Penis Pumps)
  • You should take one Spedra tablet around 30 minutes before sex.
  • Spedra can take up to 60 - 90 minutes to take effect in some men if it is taken on a full stomach after a large meal.
  • Spedra can produce an effect for up to 4 – 5 hours.
  • You should never take more than tablet for erectile dysfunction (Spedra, Viagra, Cialis, or Levitra) in a 24-hour period.
  • You should take Spedra on an empty stomach and try to limit your alcohol intake to ensure it remains effective.

Spedra does not always work for everyone the first time they use it. If this is the case you should not give up, guidance states that you should try Spedra at least 8 times before trying an alternative ED treatment. If you find Spedra tablets effective and do not experience any serious side effects you can request a repeat order via your online account. If you followed the above guidance and still find Spedra ineffective you may wish to increase the strength of your Spedra tablets, or alternatively try a different medicine such as Viagra, Cialis or Levitra.

Not everyone will experience side effects from Spedra, although they are more likely if you have never taken Spedra before or if you take Spedra 200mg due to their high strength. If you do experience side effects from Spedra tablets they may include headache, flushing, light headedness and rarely a stuffy nose or indigestion. Spedra has a small risk of nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and skin rash as with all medicines. Please read the Patient Information Leaflet enclosed with your medicines for a full list of side effects.

Stop taking Spedra and see a doctor straight away if you notice any of the following serious side effects – you may need urgent medical treatment:

  • An erection that will not go away (“priapism”). If you get an erection that lasts more than 4 hours, this must be treated as soon as possible or lasting damage can happen to your penis (including not being able to get erections).
  • Blurred vision.
  • Sudden decrease or loss of vision in one or both eyes.
  • Sudden decrease or loss of hearing (sometimes you may also feel dizzy or have ringing in your ears).

Stop taking Spedra and see a doctor straight away, if you notice any of the serious side effects above.

If you experience any adverse effects from taking your prescribed medicine it is important to let us know immediately. Please log in to your online account and message one of our healthcare professionals or alternatively call us on 0333 2200 519. In a medical emergency you should contact the emergency services or go straight to your local Accident & Emergency.

Each Spedra tablet contains avanafil as the active ingredient in either 50mg, 100mg or 200mg.

Spedra tablets also contain the following inactive ingredients: mannitol, fumaric acid, hydroxypropylcellulose, low substituted hydroxypropylcellulose, calcium carbonate, magnesium stearate and ferric oxide yellow (E172).

Do not take Spedra:

  • If you are allergic to avanafil or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6)
  • If you are taking “nitrate” medicines for chest pain (angina), such as amyl nitrite or glyceryl trinitrate. Spedra can increase the effects of these medicines and severely lower your blood pressure
  • If you are taking medicines for HIV or AIDS such as ritonavir, indinavir, saquinavir, nelfinavir or atazanavir
  • If you are taking medicines for fungal infections such as ketoconazole, itraconazole or voriconazole or certain antibiotics for bacterial infections, such as clarithromycin or telithromycin
  • If you have a serious cardiac problem
  • If you have had a stroke or heart attack in the last 6 months
  • If you have an irregular heartbeat (“arrhythmia”) or heart problems that run in your family, as shown on a heart tracing (ECG)
  • If you have low blood pressure or high blood pressure not controlled by medicines
  • If you have chest pain (angina) or you get chest pain during sexual intercourse
  • If you have a serious liver or kidney problem
  • If you have loss of vision in one eye due to not enough blood getting to your eye (non-arteritic ischemic optic neuropathy [NAION])
  • If certain serious eye problems run in your family (such as retinitis pigmentosa).

Do not take Spedra if any of the above apply to you. If you are not sure, talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Spedra.

Warnings and precautions

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Spedra:

  • If you have heart trouble. It may be risky for you to have sexual intercourse
  • If you suffer from priapism, that is a persistent erection lasting 4 hours or more. This can happen in men with conditions like sickle cell disease, multiple myeloma or leukaemia.
  • If you have a physical condition that affects the shape of your penis (such as angulation, Peyronie’s disease or cavernosal fibrosis)
  • If you have any bleeding disorder or active peptic ulceration.

If any of the above apply to you talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Spedra. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.

Problems with your sight or hearing

Some men taking medicines like Spedra have had problems with their sight and hearing – see “Serious side effects” in section 4 for more details. It is not known if these problems are related directly to Spedra, other diseases that you may have or a combination of factors.

Spedra with food and alcohol

Grapefruit juice can increase exposure to the medicine and should be avoided within 24 hours prior to taking Spedra.

Drinking alcohol at the same time as taking Spedra may increase your heart rate and lower your blood pressure. You may feel dizzy (especially when standing), have a headache or feel your heart beating in your chest (palpitations). Drinking alcohol may also decrease your ability to get an erection.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How do I take Spedra tablets?

In adults 18 years and over, the dose of Spedra is one tablet when required, around 30 minutes before sex. You should not take more than one Spedra tablet, or other erectile dysfunction treatment, in a 24-hour period.

  • Whats strengths of Spedra are available?

There are three dosages of Spedra available. These are 50mg, 100mg, and 200mg tablets. The 100mg option is recommended for men beginning Spedra treatment. The other dosages are for men who find the response to the 100mg tablets either too weak or too strong.

  • How fast does it take Spedra to start to work?

Spedra can take as little as 15 minutes, or as long as 90 minutes, to work. This variation depends on how full the stomach is. On an empty stomach, absorption will be very fast, whilst on a full stomach it can take a while.

  • Should I take Spedra tablets with food?

You should take Spedra on an empty stomach where possible. If you have recently eaten, especially if it was a large meal, this may delay the absorption of the tablet and mean it can take 60 - 90 minutes to reach its full effect.

  • Does Spedra take effect faster than Viagra (sildenafil)?

Spedra is a much faster treatment than Viagra. Viagra must be taken 1 hour before sex, whilst Spedra can work as quickly as 15-30 minutes after consumption.

Both treatments last a similar amount of time – about 4-5 hours.

Note that this does not mean that you will maintain an erection for this amount of time, but that your ability to achieve and maintain an erection will be improved during this time.

Taking Spedra after a large meal can delay its effects.

  • Does Spedra last as long as Viagra?

Both treatments last around the same amount of time, being 4-6 hours.

  • Are there less side effects from Spedra than from Viagra?

As Spedra is a more recent product, it is difficult to know if it has less side effects than Viagra. Viagra has been used for a long time, and proven to be effective and safe. If you are concerned about side effects, using Viagra will be a simpler choice.

  • Is it safe to buy Spedra online?

Yes, as long as you are buying from a website that is a legally operating and regulated pharmacy it is perfectly safe to buy Spedra online. The Independent Pharmacy is an NHS Online Pharmacy based in Bristol and has all the necessary regulation to be able to safely provide convenient access to genuine prescription treatments through our Online Pharmacy & Online Doctor.

  • How do I buy Spedra tablets online?

    It's simple!

  • Can I use other Erectile Dysfinction treatments with Spedra?

You should not take any other erectile dysfunction treatments or tablets with Spedra or within 24 hours of taking it. If you find that Spedra tablets are not as effective as you would like, you should consider increasing your dose if on a lower strength.

  • Why can't I buy 64 tablets of Spedra online at one time like some other pharmacies?

Spedra tablets are a prescription-only erectile dysfunction. For that reason, to ensure the safety of our patients and the legal operating of our pharmacy, we only supply a maximum of 32 tablets at one time. This is normally enough for 2 - 3 months of treatment, which can then be easily reordered if necessary.

  • What are the most common side effects for Spedra?

The following side effects can appear when using Spedra:
Common – may appear in up to 1 in every 10 people: Flushing, nasal congestion, headache
If any of these concern you, or Spedra causes any other side effects, consult with a doctor or pharmacist.
Not everyone will experience side effects.

  • Which medicines should you not take with Spedra?

Inform your doctor or pharmacist of any medicines you are taking and intend to take.

Medicines such as Spedra can alter the effects of other medicines, and other medicines can also alter the effect of Spedra. Spedra can affect these medicines, and so you should not combine them:

Nitrate medicines such as amyl nitrate or glyceryl trinitrate, for chest pain.

Medicine for AIDS or HIV, such as indinavir, ritonavir, saquinavir, atazanafir, or nelfinavir.

Medication for fungal infections such as itraconazole, voriconazole, or ketoconazole.

Certain antibiotics such as clarithromycin or telithromycin

If you are using any of the following medications, inform your doctor or pharmacist before using Spedra:

Alpha-blockers for lowering of the blood pressure or prostate problems

Medications for treating arrhythmia, such as procainamide, quinidine, sotalol or amiodarone

    Antibiotics such as erythromycin

Primidone, phenobarbital, or carbamazepine for epilepsy

Riociguat Moderate CYP3A4 inhibitors which may prevent Spedra from breaking down inside the body. These include Aprepitant, diltiazem, amprenavir, fosamprenavir, fluconazole, and verpamil.

Do not combine Spedra with other treatments for erectile dysfunction, such as tadalafil, vardenafil, or sildenafil. Before using Spedra, make sure to read all the instructions and packaging.

  • Buying Spedra online in the UK

Spedra should only be purchases from websites registered with the Care Quality Commission and the General Pharmaceutical Council. These sites will be regulated, ensuring they sell genuine Spedra in a safe manner.

  • Is there an unbranded Spedra alternative available?

Spedra is under patent in the UK, and so there are no generic unbranded Spedra drugs available. Any website claiming to offer cheaper and generic unbranded Spedra is breaking the law.

  • Which is more effective, Spedra or Viagra?

In clinical trials, Viagra provides effective treatment for erectile dysfunction in about 80% of men. Spedra only provides effective treatment to about 60% of men. Viagra is a well known and trusted treatment for erectile dysfunction. However, Spedra is a significantly faster acting treatment.

If speed is important to you, then you should see if Spedra is an effective treatment for you. If Spedra does not produce the effect that you desire, then you should consider using Viagra instead.

It is recommended that you discuss treatment options and side effects with a doctor before using any new medicines.

To see a full list of treatments for erectile dysfunction, take a look at our erectile dysfunction treatment page.

  • Can Spedra be combined with other erectile dysfunction treatments?

Other treatments for erectile dysfunction should be used in conjunction with Spedra, or taken within 24 hours of using Spedra.

If Spedra 100mg tablets are not satisfactory, consider using Spedra 200mg tablets.

  • What are the ingredients in Spedra?

The active ingredient in Spedra is avanafil. Spedra 100mg tablets contain 100mg of avanafil.

Spedra is a type of medicine known as a PDE-5 inhibitor that is used in treating erectile dysfunction (ED) in men. Spedra is the most recent medicine that has been approved for ED treatments. Spedra is a medicine for men who suffer from ED, much like other well known treatments such as Cialis, Viagra, and Levitra.

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a condition where the man cannot achieve an erection that can be used for sexual activity. When using Spedra, sexual stimulation is still required in order to achieve an erection.

Spedra was released to in May 2014 and under exclusive licence to be marketed only by Menarini. The wholesale price of Spedra is competitive with other branded treatments for ED, though there are some unbranded treatments (such as sildenafil, which is identical to Viagra) which are cheaper.
