Proctofoam HC is an easy and effective treatment for the symptoms of haemorrhoids (piles), namely inflammation, pain and anal itching. It is a foam which combines hydrocortisone and a local anaesthetic. The foam can be applied either externally or internally.

Hydrocortisone is the ingredient which reduces skin inflammation. Generally, inflammation occurs when certain substances which are important to the immune system are released. As a result, blood vessels expand, which causes swelling, redness and pain in the affected area. Hydrocortisone prevents these substances from initially being produced. When used in and around the rectum, hydrocortisone reduces any swelling or itching caused by haemorrhoids. Hydrocortisone is a type of corticosteroid, all of which are used to reduce inflammation.

The anaesthetic used in Proctofoam HC is called Pramoxine. It reduces the feeling of pain by blocking nerve endings from relaying pain messages to the brain.

Proctofoam HC is a short-term haemorrhoid treatment, and should be used for no more than one week. It should be applied once the morning, once in the evening, and once after each time waste is passed.

Haemorrhoids occur when varicose veins form in or around the rectum. They often result from high pressure in local blood vessels. 40 percent of people will deal with haemorrhoids at least once. You will be more likely to be affected by haemorrhoids if you are above the age of 45. Other factors which may increase your risk of developing haemorrhoids include obesity, constipation and pregnancy. Inflammation may also occur if you frequently sit on hard surfaces for extended periods of time. You can reduce your risk of haemorrhoids by losing weight, by eating more high-fibre foods to ease constipation, or by reducing your blood pressure with light exercise.

Haemorrhoids often go away without much medical help. However, treatment is sometimes required. If you notice blood in your stool or otherwise, you should consult your GP immediately.

Proctofoam HC is a short-term haemorrhoid treatment, and should be used for no more than one week. It should be applied once the morning, once in the evening, and once after each time waste is passed. It should be used only around the rectum.

Shake the container for 5-10 seconds before each dose. For the first use, follow the instructions on the label on how to prime the container. Foam should appear after one or two pumps.

For external use, apply a small amount of foam to the skin around the anus and gently rub it in.

For internal use:

  • You must use the applicator provided. Do not insert the container itself.
  • Fill the applicator up to the indicated line. This should take three or four pumps.
  • Remove the applicator from the cap of the container and hold it firmly.
  • Place your index finger over the plunger and gently insert the tip of the applicator into the anus.
  • Gently push the plunger to release the foam, then remove the applicator. Do not allow the applicator to reach the rectum past the anus.
  • Once finished, disassemble the applicator and wash it thoroughly with warm water. Rinse the opening of the container to prevent foam from building up.

If you have missed a scheduled dose, apply it as soon as you can. Skip the dose you have missed it is the next day. Do not double any dose to make up for the one that you missed. Instead, resume your dosing routine as normal.

Not everyone will experience side effects when they take Proctofoam HC, however if you do they can include:

Discolouration of the skin, skin irritation, irregular periods, excessive hair growth (women), infection, bloating in the face, neck or body

If you are concerned about these effects, or if the product affects you in any other way, stop using it and talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
