Piriton Tablets information

Piriton Allergy

Newly developed allergy tablets by Piriton are capable of alleviating symptoms of several different allergic conditions, such as hay fever, insect stings, chickenpox and nettle rash.

Piriton products contain the chlorphenamine as the active ingredient. Chlorphenamine is a sedating antihistamine. This kind of medicine prevents naturally occurring histamine from causing a chain reaction in response to allergens (such as pet fur, or pollen). Chlorphenamine blocks histamine receptors in the body, stopping histamine from beginning this reaction that leads to symptoms appearing.

Chlorphenamine is known as a sedating antihistamine as it affects the brain directly, and causes drowsiness.

Chlorphenamine is particularly effective against chickenpox due to the fact that causes drowsiness on top of its antihistamine effect. Generally itching can get worse at night, particularly in children, so the sedating effect helps reduce this symptom when it’s most problematic.

Pharmacist’s Tip:

Drowsiness causing antihistamines such as chlorphenamine are very good at treating allergic reactions like stings, bites, and rashes, as the allergy has already occurred. For treating of longer term allergies like hay fever, a long-acting antihistamine such as cetirizine or loratidine may be more effective.

Reading the following warnings carefully will help to ensure you are selecting an appropriate product.

  • Avoid use if allergic to antihistamines or if MAOI medication is being taken.
  • Patients with glaucoma, epilepsy, prostatic hypertrophy, heart disease or elevated blood pressure, asthma, bronchitis, thyrotoxicosis or liver disease should use this medication with caution.
  • These tablets should only be taken during lactation or pregnancy only on medical advice.
  • Do not consume alcohol when taking these tablets.
  • Keep ot of reach and sight of children.
