Doxycycline is a prescription antibiotic that can provide effective relief from moderate-to-severe symptoms of rosacea.
It can help alleviate the redness, bumpiness and inflammation associated with the four different types of rosacea. If you have rosacea that has not responded to topical treatments (those applied directly to the skin), Doxycycline may provide more effective relief.
Clinically proven and recommended by dermatologists, this antibiotic is taken over a treatment course of between six and twelve weeks.

About Doxycycline For Rosacea
Doxycycline is a prescription tetracycline antibiotic that can be used for the treatment of rosacea. It comes in 50mg capsules that should be taken with food and water.
It can provide relief from chronic rosacea when topical treatments have been ineffective.
How Does Doxycycline For Rosacea Work?
Doxycycline is an antibiotic that combats the symptoms of rosacea (reducing redness and inflammation) by fighting the bacteria that contribute to its symptoms. It does this by stopping the growth of protein that contributes to bacterial growth.
While it is not a cure for rosacea, it can provide substantial relief from its symptoms.
How To Take/Use Doxycycline For Rosacea
Take two 50mg Doxycycline capsules once a day with water. It is also recommended to take Doxycycline with food as it can make you nauseous if you take it on an empty stomach.
Treatment should be taken for between six and twelve weeks depending on your healthcare provider's instructions. It's very important to complete the full course, even if your symptoms improve.
Ingredients
The active ingredient of Doxycycline capsules is doxycycline hyclate. Other inactive ingredients include hypromellose, sodium lauryl sulphate, microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, gelatin and titanium dioxide (E171).
Side Effects
Like all medications, Doxycycline has been known to cause some side effects, although not everyone will experience them and their severity can vary.
The most common side effect is nausea, although this can be reduced by taking capsules with food. Some people may experience headaches, and increased sensitivity to sunlight.
Rare side effects include difficulty breathing and wheeziness, severe or persistent diarrhoea, severe headache with blurred or distorted vision, blistering of the skin, mouth, eyes and genitals, fevers or chills, joint or muscle pain, low blood pressure, or increased heart rate.
If you experience any of these rare side effects, stop taking Doxycycline and consult our clinical team or your doctor straight away.
For a full list of side effects and information about taking Doxycycline, including interactions with other medication, see the Patient Information Leaflet.
Warnings
Talk to your healthcare provider before taking Doxycycline if any of the following apply to you:
You are likely to be exposed to strong sunlight or UV light (e.g. if you are going on holiday or using a sunbed) as it can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight.
You have kidney or liver problems, myasthenia gravis (muscle weakness), porphyria (a rare blood disease) or if you have ever had systemic lupus erythematosus (an allergic condition causing joint pain, skin rashes and fever).
You suspect you have syphilis. You should tell your doctor as they will need to monitor your treatment.
Doxycycline can interact with other medications such as retinoids (causing skin irritation or increased pressure in the skull leading to intense headaches). They can increase the risk of bleeding if you are taking blood thinners.
Do not take Doxycycline if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Be sure to complete the entire course of treatment, even if your symptoms improve very quickly.

Doxycycline For Rosacea FAQs
What Is Rosacea?
Rosacea is a chronic bacterial skin condition affecting the skin of the face.
It is divided into four main types. These are:
Erythematotelangiectatic: causes persistent facial redness and visible blood vessels
Papulopustular: causes swollen red bumps (papules) and pus-filled spots (pustules) that look like acne spots
Phymatous: characterised by thicker skin, usually on your nose, chin, forehead, ears, or eyelids, creating a lumpy appearance
Ocular: causes irritation, redness, soreness and sensitivity in and around your eyes
Doxycycline can be an effective treatment for all four types of rosacea.
It can take some time for Doxycycline to produce visible changes in the symptoms of rosacea. This is because the condition responds slowly to antibiotics, meaning it may take up to several weeks to see a substantial improvement.
Can Doxycycline Cure Rosacea Permanently?
Unfortunately, there is currently no cure for rosacea.
Nevertheless, Doxycycline can play a substantial role in managing the symptoms. Rosacea is a chronic condition that requires a long-term approach to management. Symptoms can get worse if left untreated so it’s important to seek support.
Which Type Of Rosacea Does Doxycycline Treat Best?
Doxycycline treatment can help to treat all four types of rosacea. However, it can be particularly effective in treating inflammatory (papulopustular) rosacea.
Combination treatments that combine antibiotics with topical treatments or even laser treatments may help to alleviate erythematotelangiectatic and phymatous rosacea.
Steroid eye drops combined with antibiotics may also prove effective in treating ocular rosacea.
What Should I Do If Doxycycline Doesn't Improve My Rosacea?
Doxycycline can provide effective relief for moderate-to-severe rosacea.
If, however, Doxycycline doesn't provide sufficient relief, it may be worth consulting a dermatologist. They can recommend a combination of oral medication, topical treatments and light or laser skin therapy to provide a comprehensive approach to treating your rosacea.
Can I Use Topical Treatments With Doxycycline?
Yes, Doxycycline can be combined with topical treatments like ivermectin (Soolantra), or azelaic acid to provide a more extensive approach to your symptoms that may result in more effective treatment.
Will My Rosacea Come Back After Stopping Doxycycline?
Rosacea is a chronic condition, requiring long-term management.
After the course of Doxycycline treatment, your rosacea symptoms may return in time. The improvements gained by Doxycycline can be maintained by using topical skin treatments, and making lifestyle changes (e.g. eating more anti-inflammatory foods and taking regular low-intensity exercise).
Are There Any Dietary Restrictions While Taking Doxycycline?
Doxycycline should be taken with food or on a full stomach. However, dairy products should be avoided up to three hours before taking the medication as these can limit the amount of doxycycline that is absorbed into the body. Alcohol should also be avoided as it can make the medication less effective as well as making you more vulnerable to side effects such as nausea.
Spicy foods and histamine-rich foods (e.g. processed meats) should also be avoided as they can trigger rosacea flares.
Can Doxycycline Affect Birth Control Pills?
No - the evidence that antibiotics can affect oral contraception has been widely discredited. The only caveat is that if the doxycycline causes you to vomit or have significant diarrhoea, it could reduce the absorption of the contraceptive.
