Stomach acids play an essential role in the digestive process. They are responsible for breaking down food before it reaches the intestines. Normally, these acids are contained within the stomach by a group of muscles that make up the oesophageal sphincter. This sphincter acts as a one-way barrier, allowing food to pass down into the stomach, but not allowing acid or other substances to escape upwards. However, this sphincter can weaken if put under excess pressure, causing stomach acid to penetrate the sphincter and enter the oesophagus. This is what is known as acid reflux. Alternatively, heartburn is the term given to the painful sensation attributed to the refluxed acid irritating the tissue in the oesophagus. Heartburn does not relate to the heart, the term derives from sensation being felt at the base of the chest.
Acid reflux and heartburn is a common complaint, which will affect most people to some degree in their lives. However, for some, the condition can present more frequently – this is likely due to gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD). Losec is a prescription-only-medicine used to treat GORD and other similar stomach conditions. Losec's active ingredient is omeprazole, which works to inhibit the activity of the proteins responsible for producing stomach acid. These proteins are called proton pumps. Omeprazole belongs to a group of medicines called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). By decreasing the amount of stomach acid being produced, it is less likely that any acid will escape into the oesophagus. GORD is a condition that affects approximately 20% of people. Although anyone can suffer from GORD, the condition is most prevalent among men over 40. GORD sufferers will experience the pain of heartburn, coupled with a very unpleasant taste, should the acid reach the mouth. These symptoms are likely to be much worse when lying down horizontally. If you suffer from acid reflux, it is recommended to avoid lying down after eating. Also, consider sleeping on an incline to help limit the symptoms.
Obesity is the primary cause of GORD. Having large amounts of excess fat will put organs, like the stomach, under added pressure. The additional strain will eject stomach acids out past the oesophagal sphincter and into the oesophagus. Eating large meals that fill and stretch the stomach has the same effect. Certain foods can also lead to acid reflux. Try to avoid fatty, spicy or acidic foods, such as onions, chocolate, and gluten. Also, try to limit the amount of fizzy or caffeinated drinks you consume.
Studies have highlighted that alcohol and nicotine can weaken the muscles of the oesophagal sphincter. Also, certain medication can interfere with digestion or the oesophagus in a manner that may increase your risk of developing GORD. If you are in doubt about the medication you are taking and whether it might be causing your acid reflux, speak to your GP about alternative treatments.

There are many brands, which are available to buy over the counter. If you suffer with mild or infrequent bouts of dyspepsia you may find that antacids used as required are all that you require.
