Metronidazole 400mg Tablets for Dental Infections Summary

Metronidazole 400mg Tablets (Dental Infections) Information

What Are Metronidazole Tablets?

Metronidazole 400mg tablets are a type of antibiotic that can treat tooth infections as well as other dental infections. You may be given this treatment for tooth abscesses, gum infections or deeper dental infections.

How Does Metronidazole Treat Dental Infections?

Metronidazole treats dental infections by killing anaerobic bacteria. These are the bacteria that grow without oxygen and can cause infections and abscesses in your mouth. By disrupting the bacteria’s DNA, metronidazole stops them from growing and multiplying. This helps to reduce swelling, pain and pressure around your tooth or gums, and stops the infection from spreading throughout your mouth.

Alternatives to Metronidazole Tablets

Depending on the type of bacteria causing your oral infection, you may need a different antibiotic to treat it. In some cases, your prescriber may suggest treatments such as amoxicillin, clarithromycin or co-amoxiclav. This will also depend on your medical history and can be discussed during your consultation.

How to Use Metronidazole 400mg Tablets for Dental Infections

Swallow the tablets whole with a drink of water, either with food or just after eating. Never chew or crush the medicine. The initial dose for most bacterial infections is 800mg (two tablets), followed by 400mg every eight hours. Always take metronidazole exactly as directed. If you’re unsure how much to take and how often, speak to your prescriber.

Even if your symptoms improve, it’s still important to finish the full course of metronidazole to make sure that your tooth infection doesn’t come back.

  • Mouth ulcers

Warnings

Don’t drink any alcohol while you’re taking metronidazole for your dental infection, or for 48 hours after you’ve finished your course. Drinking alcohol while using this treatment can cause unpleasant side effects, such as feeling or being sick, stomach pain, hot flushes, a very fast or irregular heartbeat, or headaches.

If you have liver problems, nervous system conditions or allergies to antibiotics, you should mention these during your consultation so your prescriber can ensure metronidazole is safe for you to use.

If you’re pregnant or trying to become pregnant, you shouldn’t use metronidazole unless absolutely necessary. If breastfeeding, it’s best to avoid it, as small amounts of metronidazole may pass to your infant.

For all warnings and side effects, please see the Patient Information Leaflet.
