Who Is Vaginal Infection PH Test Kit Suitable For?
Vaginal Infection Test Information
What Is a Vaginal Infection Test?
A vaginal infection test checks the acidity (pH) of the vagina to help identify possible vaginal infections. It uses a simple self-swab to collect a sample, which is then compared to a colour chart. Changes in vaginal pH can indicate an imbalance in the vaginal environment that may be linked to infection.
Can I Use a Vaginal Infection Test?
You can use a vaginal infection test if you want to check your vaginal pH levels at home, particularly if you are experiencing symptoms such as unusual discharge, irritation or odour.
How Does a Vaginal Infection Test Work?
A vaginal infection test works by using a simple self-swab to collect a sample from the vagina. The swab is then compared to a colour chart to check the pH level. Changes in vaginal pH can indicate an imbalance in the vaginal environment, which may be linked to possible vaginal infections.
How To Use A Vaginal Infection Test
- Wash your hands.
- Remove the swab from the pouch.
- Separate the labia so the vagina is exposed. Insert the swab so around 2 inches are inside the vagina and hold it in place for about 10 seconds to collect a sample.
- Remove the swab and apply the tip to the pH area of the test panel.
- Read the result immediately while the test area is still wet and compare the colour with the chart provided in the kit.
- Dispose of the swab and test panel, then wash your hands.
What Is Included In The Kit?
The home test kit includes a sealed pouch with:
- 1 test panel
- 1 sterile swab

FAQs
Can I test my own pH levels?
Yes, you can test your own pH levels using a Vaginal Infection Test. This can help identify potential imbalances, including BV.
What pH indicates BV?
BV is typically indicated with a pH above 4.5. A normal pH level is typically between 3.8–4.5
What throws off a woman's pH balance?
Vaginal pH balance can be affected by:
- Sexual activity
- Menstruation
- Douching
- Hormonal shifts like pregnancy or menopause
- Scented soaps or pads
- Tight, non-breathable clothing
Does BV mean poor hygiene?
No. Bacterial vaginosis, otherwise known as BV, does not mean you have poor hygiene. In fact, over-washing or using scented soaps and vaginal deodorants can increase the risk of developing BV.
Can other people smell BV?
BV can sometimes cause a strong or fishy odour that may be noticeable during close physical contact, particularly during or after sex.
While you may notice it yourself, it is not usually noticeable to others at a distance.
What foods can trigger BV?
There are foods that can trigger or worsen BV.
These include:
- Sugary drinks and sweets
- Refined carbohydrates such as white bread, pasta and rice
- High fat, particularly saturated fat, including butter, cheese and red meat
- Processed foods
- Alcohol
- Diets low in fruit and vegetables
What will happen if BV is left untreated?
If left untreated, BV may increase the risk of:
- Sexually transmitted infections such as HIV, herpes and chlamydia
- Pelvic inflammatory disease
- Pregnancy complications including preterm birth and low birth weight
What naturally clears up BV?
Some lifestyle steps may help relieve symptoms or reduce the risk of recurrence. These include:
- Washing with water or mild, unscented soap
- Avoiding perfumed soaps, bubble baths and vaginal products
- Choosing breathable underwear
What can worsen BV?
Bacterial vaginosis or BV can be made worse by:
- Douching
- Using perfumed soap or vaginal deodorants
- Having unprotected sex
- Wearing tight, non-breathable clothing
- Smoking
- Menstruation
- Hormonal changes, including pregnancy or menopause
What is the root cause of BV?
The root cause of bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a disruption in the natural balance of vaginal bacteria. This allows certain bacteria to grow more than others, which can lead to symptoms and changes in vaginal pH.
What antibiotic is good for BV?
BV is treated with antibiotics. Options include Metronidazole and Dalacin (Clindamycin) Vaginal Cream.
