• Is there a way to check thyroid without a blood test?

  Yes, you can do a thyroid neck check to detect physical lumps or enlargement. You can also use an ultrasound to check for nodules or do a biopsy.

• What should you not do before a thyroid blood test?

  Before taking a thyroid test, avoid supplements such as biotin (vitamin B7) for at least 48 hours as they may affect results. Always follow the instructions provided with the test.

• What is the best time of day to check your thyroid levels?

  The best time to do a thyroid blood test at home is 7–10am before you eat breakfast. TSH levels are highest in the morning and can drop later in the day, leading to a misdiagnosis.

• What are the early signs of thyroid issues?

  Early signs of an underactive thyroid include:

  • Fatigue and lethargy, even after sleep
  • Unexplained weight gain
  • Feeling colder than usual
  • Dry skin, brittle nails, hair loss
  • Depression/difficulty concentrating

  Early signs of an overactive thyroid include:

  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Heart palpitations
  • Feeling hot and sweaty
  • Increased irritability, anxiousness or insomnia

• What is thyroid belly?

  Thyroid belly refers to abdominal weight gain, bloating and swelling which can be caused by an underactive thyroid or hypothyroidism. This is because low hormone levels slow metabolism and cause water retention.

• What is underactive thyroid?

  An underactive thyroid, or hypothyroidism, is when the thyroid gland in the neck doesn’t produce enough hormones and it slows down the body's functions.

• What is overactive thyroid?

  An overactive thyroid, or hyperthyroidism, is when the thyroid gland produces excessive thyroid hormones and speeds up your metabolism. This can cause:

  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Sweating
  • Nervousness and anxiety

• What habits damage the thyroid?

  Habits that can negatively impact your thyroid include:

  • Chronic stress and poor sleep
  • Poor nutritional habits, including processed foods and sugar, and extreme dieting
  • Excessive consumption of raw, cruciferous vegetables including broccoli, cabbage and kale
  • Smoking
  • Excessive caffeine and alcohol intake

• At what age do thyroid problems start?

  Thyroid problems can start at any age, including childhood. Typically an overactive thyroid appears between 20–40 and an underactive thyroid appears between 30–50. Risk increases significantly after the age of 60.

  Women are 10 times more likely to develop thyroid problems than men.
