If Mounjaro is a part of your weight loss journey, you'll know that a Mounjaro KwikPen® holds four pre-measured, accurate doses. After these have been administered, there is usually a little liquid still left inside the pen.

This residual liquid is deliberate overfill built into the pen to ensure that each dose is administered fully. The same overfill is usually supplied with other injectable medications. However, some people have started to refer to this extra as a fifth or "Golden Dose".

It may seem like a welcome freebie. However, this residual fluid is not an extra dose. And this means that it’s not clinically recommended that you treat it like one. Taking the "Golden Dose" is NOT the same as taking an extra dose or microdosing.

In this guide, we'll look at what you need to know about the "Golden Dose" and answer some frequently asked questions.

Key Takeaway 1

The “Golden Dose” is the extra liquid left in a Mounjaro Kwikpen after the four doses have been administered.

Key Takeaway 2

Some people try to extract this extra medicine to take as an extra or free dose of Mounjaro.

Key Takeaway 3

Key takeaway 3 | It’s not safe or clinically recommended, and there can be consequences if you take it.

Can You Use The Fifth Dose of Mounjaro?

It is not accurate to call the remaining liquid in a Mounjaro pen a fifth dose. The terms "fifth dose" and "Golden Dose" are informal terms used by online influencers and weight loss communities.

Keep in mind that dosages can vary substantially depending on each person's needs and where they are in their weight loss journey. This means that the remaining liquid is not likely to be enough to constitute a complete dose. In fact, the amount left could vary between different users and can’t be measured accurately. You should only use Mounjaro as instructed by a licensed clinician and dispose of KwikPen®s properly after the four doses have been administered.

It is not clinically recommended to take the "Golden Dose" because not only is it potentially ineffective, it's also potentially unsafe due to the fact that you can’t know for sure how much is in there.

Risks Of Using The “Golden Dose” Of Mounjaro

As we know, referring to the remaining Mounjaro left in the pen after four doses as a fifth or "golden" dose is inaccurate.

This means that if you were to go against the recommendation and take it as a dose, it would carry certain risks. For example, the remaining fluid may be less than your prescribed dosage. This underdosing can make the treatment less effective and undermine your progress. Alternatively, it could even be more than your prescribed dosage, resulting in an overdose. This can greatly increase your risk of side effects which can include nausea, vomiting, constipation or diarrhoea.

Other, more serious side effects can include hypoglycemia, tachycardia, vision changes and an increased risk of pancreatitis, gallstones and kidney damage.

Residual fluid is often extracted with a needle and injected. This has its own safety risks, particularly around the sterility of needles being used. A used KwikPen® expires after 30 days. After this, using the remaining fluid could introduce bacteria into your body and increase your risk of infection.

Can The “Golden Dose” Of Mounjaro Save Me Money?

Mounjaro prices may have increased in the UK and Europe, although they are still considerably lower than in the U.S. This price increase, combined with the continued rise in the cost of living, has many worried about the cost of their weight loss regime.

While these concerns are absolutely understandable, we do not recommend taking the "Golden Dose" to save money. It may impede your progress or, worse, increase your risk of experiencing harmful side effects.

If you're worried about the rising cost of Mounjaro and how it will affect your finances, our UK-based clinical team is here to help.

Final Thoughts

As with all medications, it's vital that you take Mounjaro exactly as prescribed by a clinician. Weight loss medications like Mounjaro can be rendered much less effective or even unsafe if not properly administered. The idea of a "Golden Dose" may be appealing if you're trying to save money.

However, the remaining fluid left in the KwikPen® after four doses cannot safely or accurately be described as a dose. At best, injecting this fluid may negatively affect your weight loss progress. At worst, it can result in safety risks and a greater risk of experiencing side effects.
