Health Benefits of Weight Loss: How GLP-1 Medications Can Help

When you're working towards a healthier weight, it's natural to focus on the number on the scales, but losing weight can have real, clinically proven benefits for your heart, joints, sleep, blood pressure and more. Here’s what the research really means.

Note: Individual results vary. The benefits described are based on clinical research and guidelines. Always discuss your own health goals with a clinician.

Heart Health — Blood Pressure

Your heart is paying attention, even before the scales do.

For many people with high blood pressure, losing weight is one of the most effective things they can do. Even a modest amount of weight loss can make a real difference, in some cases, enough to reduce reliance on medication*.

*Always consult your doctor before making any changes to your medication.

Clinical evidence: Losing 5–15% of body weight can help reduce blood pressure in people with overweight or obesity.

Blood Sugar — Type 2 Diabetes Management

Fewer spikes. Better numbers. A healthier future.

For people living with type 2 diabetes, weight loss can do more than improve how your body manages blood sugar. Even modest weight loss can improve glucose control, leading to remission, reducing and even removing the need for medication. Even modest weight loss can have a significant impact.

Blood Sugar — Type 2 Diabetes Remission

For some people, this could mean more than better numbers.

In a landmark UK trial (DiRECT), nearly half of participants with type 2 diabetes who followed a structured weight loss programme saw their diabetes go into remission. Among those who lost 15kg or more, that rose to 86%.

These are some of the most striking findings in weight loss research and they underpin why meaningful weight loss can be life-changing.

Clinical evidence: In some people with relatively recent type 2 diabetes, substantial weight loss can put diabetes into remission. In the DiRECT trial, remission occurred in 46% of participants at 12 months, rising to 86% in those who lost 15kg or more.

Liver Health — Fatty Liver (MASLD)

Your liver can improve before you even notice it.

Fatty liver disease affects millions of people in the UK, often with no symptoms at all. Even modest weight loss can start to reverse it. Some of the most important changes happen quietly, where you can’t see them.

Clinical evidence: Losing as little as 3–5% of body weight can begin to reduce liver fat. Losses of 7–10% are associated with improvements in liver inflammation, and 10% or more with improvements in fibrosis.

Sleep — Obstructive Sleep Apnoea

Wake up feeling rested.

Poor sleep affects everything, energy, mood, focus, appetite. For people with obstructive sleep apnoea, losing weight can be transformative. Many people notice improvements in sleep quality well before the number on the scales feels significant.

Clinical evidence: Weight loss can reduce the severity of obstructive sleep apnoea. In the SURMOUNT-OSA trial, tirzepatide (Mounjaro) significantly reduced the apnoea–hypopnoea index, improved sleep-related patient-reported outcomes, and reduced hypoxic burden.

Joints & Mobility — Knee Osteoarthritis

Walk upstairs without thinking about it.

Every extra kilogram places additional load on the knees, roughly four times the force with every step. Weight loss reduces that load, and the difference people feel can be significant. One of the first things people often notice is that everyday movement becomes easier.

In clinical trials, semaglutide reduced knee osteoarthritis pain beyond what weight loss alone would be expected to produce.

Clinical evidence: Losing around 10% of body weight can significantly improve knee pain, physical function and walking ability in people with knee osteoarthritis. In STEP 9, semaglutide reduced body weight and knee pain significantly more than placebo in people with obesity and moderate-to-severe knee OA.

Heart Health — Cardiovascular Events

Give your heart a better future.

Some of the most important health benefits of weight loss happen where you can’t see them. Long term, sustained weight loss, particularly with GLP-1 treatment, can significantly improve heart health.

Clinical evidence: In adults with overweight or obesity and established cardiovascular disease, semaglutide (Wegovy) reduced major adverse cardiovascular events compared with placebo over a four-year follow-up period.

Quality Of Life — Daily Function

The goal isn’t just a number on the scales.

For many people, the biggest changes aren't measured on the scales. Everyday life becomes easier. Walking further, playing with children, travelling comfortably, climbing stairs or simply moving with confidence can feel possible again.

That’s the point of it all.

Clinical evidence: Clinically meaningful weight loss has been shown to significantly improve physical functioning, health-related quality of life and day-to-day mobility. In the STEP programme, semaglutide significantly improved physical functioning versus placebo, with more participants achieving meaningful within-patient improvements.

Health Benefits During Plateaus

Your health doesn’t pause when the scales do. Weight loss is rarely linear. Plateaus are a normal part of the journey, but they don't mean progress has stopped.

Even when the scales aren't moving, your body is still improving. Blood pressure, blood sugar, liver health and sleep continue to improve. The work is still happening. The benefits you’ve already gained don’t disappear when your weight temporarily levels out.

Clinical evidence: 5–15% weight loss improves blood pressure and HbA1c (AACE). Liver improvements begin at 3–5% (AASLD). These gains are maintained during weight plateaus, not lost.

Hormonal Health — PCOS

Weight loss can support hormonal balance too.

For women with Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS, formerly PCOS) who are overweight, weight loss can help address some of the underlying drivers of the condition, including insulin resistance, which sits at the heart of many PCOS symptoms.

Clinical evidence: In people with PCOS and overweight or obesity, weight loss of 5–15% or more can improve insulin resistance, and may improve cycle regularity and ovulation. Responses vary between individuals.
