Hormonal Acne Treatment

Hormonal Acne Treatment is an effective treatment for hormonal acne. It’s currently the only MHRA-approved topical treatment that’s formulated to tackle hormonal acne by targeting androgen receptors. High levels of androgens (which are a type of hormone) can cause an overproduction of sebum, something that can contribute to acne.

Studies have shown that Hormonal Acne Treatment is effective in reducing both inflammatory and non-inflammatory lesions, particularly in moderate to severe acne.

How Does Hormonal Acne Treatment Work?

Hormonal Acne Treatment affects your androgen receptors, changing the way that your body responds to hormonal changes. These hormonal changes can cause an overproduction of sebum, which is an oily substance naturally produced by your skin. Inhibiting these androgen receptors can reduce the production of sebum, making it less likely that oil will mix with dead skin cells and dirt, and block your pores.

As well as reducing sebum production, Hormonal Acne Treatment helps to calm inflammation, prevent acne and improve skin tone and texture.

How To Use Hormonal Acne Treatment Cream

You should apply the cream twice per day. You only need to use about 1g of the cream, which is around enough to fit on your fingertip.

Apply a thin layer of the cream to the affected area using clean, dry hands. Avoid contact with your eyes, mouth or nose and wash your hands thoroughly after application to prevent the cream being spread to another part of your body.

Side Effects

The most common side effects are reddening, scaling, dryness and itching affecting the skin that’s being treated. You may also experience more severe reactions such as burning or peeling of the skin, but these are much less common.

In rare cases, the cream can affect your body’s natural hormone balance by interfering with how your adrenal glands function. This is called HPA (hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal) axis suppression.

This effect is uncommon and was only seen in a small number of people in clinical studies.

The issue went away after treatment was stopped.

It is more likely if the cream is:

• Used over large areas of skin
• Used for a long time
• Covered with airtight dressings (called occlusive dressings)

If you follow the recommended use — applying a thin layer twice a day to acne-affected areas — this is very unlikely to be a problem.

However, let us know if you experience:

• Unusual tiredness or weakness
• Dizziness or fainting
• Low blood pressure

Hormonal Acne Treatment is a prescription-only treatment, so you’ll need to have a consultation with a member of our UK-based clinical team to ensure this medication is the best option for you.

During your consultation, it’s important you tell your clinician about any prescription or over-the-counter medications you take. It’s also important to mention any vitamins or herbal supplements you use on a regular basis.

If you have any problems with your adrenal glands, develop symptoms of an adrenal gland disorder or have an allergic reaction to the cream, you may need to stop treatment immediately.
