What is Selsun Shampoo?

Selsun Shampoo 2.5% is a medicated shampoo used to treat dandruff. Selsun Shampoo contains the active ingredient selenium sulphide which reduces greasiness of the scalp and slows the rate that skin cells are produced on the scalp to decrease flakiness.

Selsun Shampoo is suitable for the treatment of those over the age of 5 years and is for topical (on the skin) use only.

Selsun Shampoo is not suitable for everyday use as it can irritate the scalp. When commencing treatment with Selsun Shampoo it should be used twice a week for the first 2 weeks followed by once a week for the next 2 weeks.

What is dandruff?

Selsun is an effective treatment for severe cases of dandruff when the average brand anti-dandruff shampoos have not been effective.

Dandruff is a common skin complaint which is not harmful and is not contagious but can be irritating if the scalp is irritated and itchy. Dandruff can also cause embarrassment for some people if the skin flakes are obvious or particularly large.

Dandruff can have several different causes including fungal infections, eczema, allergic reactions to products and psoriasis.

There are a few different treatment options for dandruff. For more information about causes and treatments visit our Dry Scalp Treatment and Advice page.

What is Selsun Shampoo used for?

Selsun Shampoo contains 2.5% of selenium sulphide in every 100mls. Selenium sulphide is effective in treating severe cases of dandruff that cause itching and irritation of the scalp. Selsun Shampoo also reduces excess oils and skin flakes produced by the scalp.

Selsun Shampoo is also an effective treatment for seborrheic dermatitis, which is a fungal skin condition that causes inflammation of areas of the body where there are a lot of sebaceous glands.

Seborrheic dermatitis presents similarly to dandruff with patches of dry, red, scaly areas of skin. Most commonly seborrheic dermatitis affects the scalp, the face, the ears, chest, back and skin folds.

If you think you are experiencing seborrheic dermatitis that is not isolated to the scalp speak to a doctor or pharmacist as other treatment options may be available.

There are potentially many cause you to have a dry, scaly, itchy or irritated scalp which may be more receptive to different treatment options. For more information about causes and treatments for dry scalps see our Dry Scalp Treatments and Advice page.

If you would like further advice about scalp conditions speak to a doctor or pharmacist.

How does Selsun Shampoo work?

The active ingredient selenium sulphide included within Selsun Shampoo works by destroying certain fungal or yeast infections called dermatophytes that can be the cause of dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis.

Selsun further works to reduce dandruff by slowing down the production of cells on the top layer of skin which therefore reduces the itchy, flaky skin associated with dandruff.

Does Selsun Shampoo treat fungal infections?

Selsun Shampoo is effective in treating dandruff caused by fungal infections of the skin caused by dermatophytes. Dermatophytes are a common fungus that causes inflammation of the skin in both humans and animals.

Nizoral is another anti-fungal shampoo used to treat dry scalp conditions, which can also be purchased online from The Independent Pharmacy. Nizoral contains the active ingredient ketoconazole.

Selsun Shampoo alternatives

There are several Selsun Shampoo alternatives available from The Independent Pharmacy for the treatment of dry scalp conditions. For more information about the causes of dandruff and available treatment options please see our Dry Scalp Treatment and Advice page.
