Viscotears eye gel is used to treat the symptoms of dry eyes. These symptoms include; burning, irritation, soreness, and dryness. Dry eye conditions are usually caused by the eyes not producing enough tears to keep them moist (keratoconjunctivitis sicca). Viscotears contain the active ingredient carbomer, which is an eye lubricant. This synthetic polymer acts to form a viscous eye gel that helps moisten the surface of the eye. Carbomer grips to the surface of the eye, which means it isn’t washed away as easily as other lubricating eye drops.

Viscotears is suitable for people who suffer from dry eyes because:

  • They aren’t producing enough of their own tears.
  • The tear film they are producing is unstable.

Viscotears Eye Gel is available in two forms. The first is a small 10g tube. The second is single use vials that have individual twist-off seals.

Useful information:

Wash hands prior to use.

When using the eye gel, ensure you do not touch your eye or any other surface with the tip of the dropper. This will avoid contaminating the eye drops.

If a contact lens wearer, these should be removed prior to application.

Viscotears may cause your vision to blur temporarily immediately after application. Do not drive or operate machinery until this effect has worn off.

Viscotears 10g tubes will need to be discarded after four weeks of first opening. It may be helpful to write the date of opening on the packet. Dispose of all medicines carefully, preferably by returning them to any pharmacy.

The single use vials contain enough gel to treat both eyes if necessary. Once you have applied the drops, the vial should be thrown away, even if some gel remains.

*Prescription medicines are supplied subject to a medical consultation at the discretion of a doctor.
