About Belnifrem
What is Belnifrem?
Belnifrem is a proven, prescription-only smoking cessation treatment designed to tackle physical and mental cravings, giving you the best chance of quitting smoking permanently. This 25-day treatment will kickstart your journey to a smoke-free life.
Taken as a 25-day course the active ingredient cytisinicline works by mimicking the effects of nicotine on the brain to help reduce withdrawal symptoms but without containing any nicotine.
Belnifrem increases your chances of quitting successfully and staying smoke-free for good, offering extra support beyond willpower alone.
How Does Belnifrem Work?
Belnifrem works by binding to the same receptors in your brain that nicotine normally stimulates. When you smoke, these receptors release dopamine, a feel-good chemical, which reinforces your urge to keep smoking.
Belnifrem mimics nicotine, easing your cravings and withdrawal symptoms without actually delivering any nicotine. At the same time, it blocks nicotine from attaching to these receptors so, if you do smoke, it feels less rewarding.
How To Take Belnifrem
Belnifrem packs contain 100 tablets – enough for a 25-day course of treatment.
Day 1- 3 | Take one tablet every two hours | Six tablets daily |
Day 4 -12 | Take one tablet every two and a half hours | Five tablets daily |
Day 13 - 16 | Take one tablet every three hours | Four tablets daily |
Day 17 - 20 | Take one tablet every five hours | Three tablets daily |
Day 21 – 25 | Take one to two tablets a day |
Take Belnifrem with a glass of water. Stop smoking no later than the 5th day of treatment. If you continue it could increase the risk of side effects.

Can I Use Belnifrem At The Same Time As Other Stop Smoking Treatments?
Belnifrem is designed to be used to help you stop smoking on its own and shouldn’t be combined with other smoking cessation products like nicotine gum or patches. If you use these together it could increase the risk or severity of side effects or reduce the effectiveness of the treatment.
Always speak to our healthcare professionals or your GP first to make sure Belnifrem is the right treatment for you and if combining with other stop smoking products is safe and appropriate.
How Long Does It Take For Belnifrem To Start Working?
Belnifrem gets to work as soon as you start taking it, acting directly on the receptors in your brain linked to nicotine cravings. Most people notice a reduction of withdrawal symptoms and the urge to smoke within the first week.
For best results, it’s usually recommended you start the course before your planned quit date, so it has a chance to build up in your system. It’s also important you follow the dosing instructions exactly and take the full course.
What Is The Success Rate Of Belnifrem?
Stop smoking medications are proven to significantly increase your chances of quitting compared to willpower alone. Without help only 3-6% of smokers succeed in stopping long term. If you use medication combined with behavioural change support, these figures rise to 20% at the first year.
Treatments like Belnifrem can help you break the nicotine addiction cycle and achieve long term success. Using medical support is one of the most effective ways to quit for good.
Can You Drink Alcohol While Taking Belnifrem?
You should try to limit your alcohol intake or avoid it altogether while taking Belnifrem. Drinking during treatment may increase the risk of side effects such as dizziness or nausea. It may also reduce your inhibitions and your ability to stay on track with quitting smoking.
If you do drink, keep it moderate and monitor how you feel. For more personalised advice on alcohol and Belnifrem, speak to our healthcare professionals.
How Long Does Belnifrem Treatment Last?
Belnifrem is a 25-day treatment designed to cover the first few weeks of quitting when your physical and psychological cravings are at their strongest. Most people complete the full course before continuing smoke-free without medication. Some people may require other smoking cessation treatment or help.
Our healthcare professionals will guide you on the length or treatment and may alter it or offer alternatives to suit your personal circumstances.
What If I Start Smoking Again After Belnifrem Treatment?
Don’t be discouraged if you slip and start smoking again after Belnifrem treatment. It’s not easy to quit and lots of people need more than one attempt to manage it for good. Speak to our healthcare professionals about restarting the treatment or to find out what alternative smoking cessation products may help.
Remember, every attempt is a step closer to success. With the right plan in place and the appropriate treatment you can still achieve your goal of becoming smoke free. The key is keep going and not give up.
Are Nicotine-Free Smoking Cessation Treatments Better?
Nicotine-containing products are considered effective in managing cravings and withdrawal symptoms but treatments like Belnifrem can help retrain the brain. They are not necessarily considered better but may be preferable for people with certain conditions for whom a nicotine-containing product would not be suitable.
Just like nicotine containing products they can still help you break the cycle of addiction. Ultimately, the best treatment will depend on your individual needs and our healthcare experts can talk to you about the most suitable option.
What If I Accidentally Take Too Much Belnifrem?
Try not to worry if you take too much. Keep an eye on your reaction and watch out for signs of nicotine intoxication. Although the treatment doesn’t contain nicotine the symptoms of Belnifrem overdose are the same.
These include malaise, nausea, vomiting, increased heart rate, fluctuations in heart rate, breathing problems, blurred vision and convulsions.
If you experience any of these symptoms or any others not listed stop taking Belnifrem and speak to your doctor.
