About Maexeni Combined Contraceptive Pill
What Is Maexeni?
Maexeni is a prescription combined oral contraceptive pill used to prevent pregnancy in people under 49. It contains synthetic versions of oestrogen and progesterone: ethinylestradiol and levonorgestrel. These mimic the body’s natural hormones to stop you from getting pregnant.
Can I Take Maexeni Combined Pill?
You may be able to take Maexeni if you’re under the age of 49, a non-smoker, and have never had migraine with aura, blood clots or other certain health conditions. Before taking the Maexeni Combined Pill, you should always complete a consultation to make sure it’s safe for you to use.
Is Maexeni The Same As Other Combined Oral Contraceptives?
Maexeni works the same way as other combined pills containing ethinylestradiol and levonorgestrel. These include brands like Microgynon, Rigevidon and Ovranette. They all contain the same amount and type of hormone in the same doses, but the pills' packaging and names may differ.
How Does Maexeni Work?
Maexeni works to protect you against pregnancy in three ways. It prevents your ovaries from releasing an egg each month, so there’s nothing for sperm to fertilise. It thickens the mucus in your cervix so sperm can’t reach the womb, and keeps the womb lining too thin for an egg to grow. When taken correctly, it’s more than 99% effective.
How To Use Maexeni
Maexeni comes in strips of 21 pills. You take one pill at the same time each day for 21 days and then have a break for seven days where you don’t take anything. You should have a period during this break, and then on the eighth day start the next strip of pills.
Ingredients
The active ingredients are ethinylestradiol and levonorgestrel. Each tablet contains 0.03mg of ethinylestradiol and 0.15mg of levonorgestrel.
The other ingredients in the tablet core are lactose monohydrate, povidone K30, crospovidone type A and magnesium stearate.
The ingredients in the coating are polyvinyl alcohol, titanium dioxide (E171), macrogol 3350, talc (E553b) and iron oxide yellow (E172).
Side Effects
Like all medicines, Maexeni can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Common side effects include:
- Feeling sick
- Stomach ache
- Putting on weight
- Headaches
- Depressive moods
- Mood swings
- Sore or painful breasts
If your side effects are severe, speak to your prescriber for advice. You may need to change medication.
Warnings
Maexeni may slightly increase your risk of blood clots, heart attack, or stroke, especially if you smoke or are over thirty-five. You shouldn’t take it if you have a history of these conditions. Seek urgent medical attention if you notice any signs of a possible blood clot, which are detailed in the patient information leaflet that comes with your pills.
Maexeni Combined Contraceptive Pill FAQs
- What Is Maexeni?- Maexeni is a combined oral contraceptive pill. It contains two synthetic hormones, ethinylestradiol and levonorgestrel, which are artificial versions of oestrogen and progesterone. It stops pregnancy by preventing your body from releasing an egg, thickening your cervical mucus, so sperm have a harder time getting through, and thinning your womb lining to prevent implantation.
- Do I Need A Prescription For Maexeni?- Yes, you'll need a prescription before you can take Maexeni. To get a prescription, you’ll complete a short health questionnaire that a licensed prescriber will review. They’ll ensure that Maexeni is safe to use and the best option for your circumstances and issue you the prescription if so.
- How Do I Take Maexeni?- Take one tablet at the same time each day for 21 days. After the 21 days are up, you’ll then take a seven-day break where you don’t take any pills. You should start your bleed during this break, and then on the eighth day, start the new strip of 21 pills even if you’re still bleeding.
- How Soon Does Maexeni Work?- This depends on when in your menstrual cycle you start taking Maexeni. If you start your pack on the first day of your period, you’ll be protected against pregnancy straight away. If you start at any other time, make sure you use condoms for the first seven days.
- Who Should Not Use Maexeni?- You shouldn’t use Maexini if you have or have ever had: - Blood clots
- Breast cancer
- Heart attack
- Liver disease
- Migraine with aura
- Stroke
- Very high blood pressure
- Very high cholesterol
 - You should also avoid Maexeni if you’re allergic to any of the ingredients.
- Does Maexeni Protect Against STIs?- No, Maexeni doesn’t protect against STIs. Only condoms can effectively protect you from getting or passing on an STI. Condoms act as a barrier between body parts and stop the exchange of bodily fluids during sex and sexual acts.
- Does Maexeni Cause Weight Gain?- Weight gain is a possible side effect of taking Maexeni, but it doesn’t happen to everyone who takes it. Eating a balanced diet and participating in regular exercise can help you maintain a healthy weight and reduce your chance of putting on weight while taking Maexeni. If you experience any unwanted side effects, including weight gain, speak to your prescriber.
- Can Maexeni Regulate My Periods?- Maexeni will likely make your periods more regular, lighter, and less painful. Many people report experiencing these positive side effects when they take Maexeni as directed. It can also help with any premenstrual symptoms you usually experience by reducing the severity of these symptoms.
- What Should I Do If I Miss A Pill?- If you miss a pill by less than 12 hours, take the delayed pill as soon as you remember and your next pill at the normal time. This might mean you take two pills in one day, but that’s fine. - If it’s been more than 12 hours since you were due to take your missed pill, or you have missed more than one pill, take the most recently missed pill immediately and then the next due pill at the normal time. Use additional forms of birth control for the next seven days and check the patient information leaflet for further instructions.
