Eumovate Cream and Ointment - Available Online
Eumovate provides effective relief from the itching and irritation of skin conditions like eczema and dermatitis.
It is available in two formulations, either as a cream or an ointment.
Both contain the same active ingredient, clobetasone butyrate, which is a corticosteroid that reduces inflammation and soothes irritation.
The main difference is in their base. The cream is water-based, making it ideal for moist or weeping skin, while the ointment is oil-based, providing a richer texture and forming a more protective layer for very dry or scaly skin.
You can choose the best option for your skin type and condition.
Eumovate works by calming your skin’s immune response, helping to reduce redness, swelling and itching so you can feel more comfortable. Available in a smaller 30g tube for occasional flare-ups or a 100g tube for more regular use, you can get Eumovate quickly and conveniently from The Independent Pharmacy.
We just need you to take a quick, easy and 100% confidential online consultation to see if it’s right for you.

Eumovate Cream and Ointment Summary
About Eumovate Cream/Ointment
Eumovate is a moderately potent steroid treatment for inflammatory skin conditions. It works on problem areas by calming irritation and helping the skin heal. Both the cream and ointment contain the same active ingredient, clobetasone butyrate. However, the formulations have different textures to suit different skin needs and skin types.
The cream is best suited to moist or weeping areas, while the ointment seals in moisture on very dry, scaly patches. A member of our clinical team can advise on which is the best option for you.
How Does Eumovate Work?
When your skin reacts to an allergen, inflammatory chemicals are produced which widen the blood vessels and cause symptoms like redness, dryness and itching.
Eumovate's active ingredient is the corticosteroid clobetasone butyrate. This prevents your cells from releasing the chemicals that trigger the inflammation, redness and dryness associated with certain skin conditions.
How To Use Eumovate
Always use Eumovate as advised by our clinical team. They will be able to advise you on how much to use for each body part. This can vary between adults and children of different ages.
Be sure to wash your hands before and after applying the treatment.
Whether you're using cream or ointment, the application is the same. Apply a thin layer of Eumovate to your affected skin twice a day. You can reduce this to once a day when symptoms improve. Massage gently into your skin until the formula disappears.
Eumovate Ingredients
Both Eumovate cream and ointment contain clobetasone butyrate (0.05%) as the active ingredient.
Other inactive ingredients in the cream include glycerol monostearate, cetostearyl alcohol, beeswax substitute 6621 (contains paraffin), Arlacel 165, dimeticone 20, chlorocresol, sodium citrate, citric acid monohydrate and purified water.
Inactive ingredients in Eumovate ointment include glycerol, polyethylene, liquid paraffin and white soft paraffin.
For a full list of ingredients please refer to the Patient Information Leaflets.
Side Effects
Like any medicine, Eumovate cream and ointment have some risk of side effects. These are usually mild and temporary and not everyone will experience them.
Some people may experience a slight burning or stinging sensation after applying Eumovate. This usually subsides as your skin adjusts to the treatment.
Rare effects include skin thinning, stretch marks or changes in skin colour, especially with long‑term use.
Very rare side effects include an increased risk of skin infection, increased hair growth, changes in skin colour, high blood pressure, eye cataracts or increased pressure in your eyes (glaucoma).
If your skin condition gets worse, or you experience swelling or rashes, stop using Eumovate and talk to a member of our clinical team.
Warnings
For a complete list of warnings and precautions associated with the use of Eumovate cream or ointment, please read the Patient Information Leaflet thoroughly.
Do not use Eumovate if you are allergic to clobetasone butyrate or any of the ingredients in either formulation. Talk to our clinical team before using if you have had an allergic reaction to any steroid or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Do not use for untreated skin infections, acne, rosacea, peri‑oral dermatitis or itchy skin without inflammation.
Use on your face only if advised by our clinical team, and for short periods. Avoid contact with your eyes. Do not cover treated areas with a bandage or other occlusive cover unless explicitly told to, as this can lead to your skin absorbing the formula more quickly than intended.
Fabrics can catch fire easily after contact with paraffin‑based products, so keep away from flames and heat. Keep out of the sight and reach of children.
For external use only.
Eumovate and Pregnancy
Eumovate ointment shouldn't be used while pregnant or breastfeeding to treat eczema unless discussed and approved by your doctor. Even so, it shouldn't be used on large areas of skin or for a long period. Some studies suggest that corticosteroids applied to the skin during pregnancy may cause birth defects.
Eumovate Cream & Ointment reviews
What Is Eumovate Cream Used For?
Eumovate cream and ointment are used to treat inflammatory skin conditions like eczema, contact dermatitis, seborrhoeic eczema, insect bite reactions, heat rash and some forms of psoriasis.
The active ingredient, clobetasone butyrate (0.05%), is a moderately potent corticosteroid. It interacts with your cells to suppress your skin’s immune response. This reduces redness, swelling and itching so your skin can heal naturally. It is initially applied twice a day, but can be applied once a day as your symptoms improve.
Eumovate comes in a choice of formulations for different skin needs. The water‑based cream spreads easily and suits moist or weeping areas. The oil‑based ointment seals in moisture, so it better suits patches of dry, scaly skin.
A member of our clinical team can advise on the best formulation for your needs.
Eumovate cream and ointment are both available in a choice of 30g and 100g tubes.
Can Eumovate Be Used On Your Face?
You should only use Eumovate on your face if advised to do so by our clinical team.
Facial skin is thinner and more sensitive, so corticosteroids have an increased risk of side effects when used on your face.
Whichever formulation you choose, use it sparingly, avoiding your eyes. Because corticosteroids can thin your skin, Eumovate is not recommended for long-term facial use.
Stop using immediately and seek advice from our clinicians if irritation occurs or your symptoms worsen.
How Often Should Eumovate Be Applied?
Initially, you may be directed to use Eumovate twice a day, although this can be reduced to once a day if your symptoms improve. Remember to use only as directed, applying the amount prescribed by our clinical team.
Use your fingertip as a unit of measurement.
Is Eumovate Suitable For Children?
Eumovate can be used by children, but should only be used as directed. Children's skin is more absorbent, so there is a greater risk of side effects.
Therefore, children should not use Eumovate cream or ointment for more than seven days. Avoid overusing Eumovate or applying it to skin covered by tight clothing, underwear or nappies.
How Long Does It Take Eumovate To Work?
In many cases, people notice improvement within a few days as inflammation eases. Most people notice a reduction in redness, itching and swelling within a few days with regular use.
Continue as advised for the recommended course length, even if your symptoms improve. If there is no improvement within the expected timeframe, or your symptoms worsen, stop treatment and contact our clinical team.
Some conditions need longer or different treatment. Our team will be able to recommend a safe and effective alternative.
Can Eumovate Be Used During Pregnancy?
Corticosteroids like clobetasone butyrate are usually safe to use during pregnancy. It is absorbed into the skin and does not enter the bloodstream in significant amounts.
However, you should always consult a member of our clinical team if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant or are breastfeeding.
Do not apply Eumovate to the skin of your breasts if you are breastfeeding due to the risk of accidental ingestion by your baby.
Can Eumovate Be Used To Treat Psoriasis?
Eumovate should only be used to treat psoriasis if prescribed by a clinician. While potent corticosteroids like clobetasone butyrate can be used to treat patches of psoriasis, they carry certain risks including risk of rebound relapse or the development of pustular psoriasis.
A member of our clinical team will be able to advise you on whether Eumovate is a suitable treatment for your psoriasis.
Will Eumovate Cream Stain My Clothes?
Eumovate cream is water-based and absorbed into the skin quickly, so staining is unlikely.
Eumovate ointment, on the other hand, is oil-based and may stain fabrics. Let the product absorb into your skin fully before dressing and consider using loose clothing to reduce the risk of staining.
Wash clothing and bedding regularly. Fabrics that have been in contact with paraffin‑based products can catch fire more easily. Keep away from flames and heat sources, even after washing, as some residue may remain in fibres over time.
Can Eumovate Be Used For Acne?
No. Eumovate is not suitable for treating acne. Corticosteroids can sometimes worsen acne by thinning your skin and making your pores produce more oil.
Using Eumovate on acne‑prone skin may also mask infection or delay effective treatment. If you are dealing with acne, a member of our clinical team will be more than happy to recommend a more suitable treatment.
