• Is lidocaine cream safe for the genital area?

  Yes, lidocaine cream is considered safe for the genital area when used correctly.

  It’s a local anaesthetic used to relieve the pain, itching and discomfort associated with genital herpes. Make sure you:

  • Avoid overuse or applying too often
  • Take care on broken or very irritated skin (check guidance or ask a pharmacist)
  • Stop if you notice irritation or a reaction

• Is lidocaine ok to put directly on herpes?

  Yes, lidocaine may be applied to the affected area to relieve pain. It provides temporary numbing relief during a genital herpes breakout.

• Should I moisturise herpes?

  Ideally you would keep genital herpes sores clean and dry rather than moisturising them. Excessive moisture may increase irritation. A thin layer of petroleum jelly, such as Vaseline, may reduce pain when you urinate.

• Is 4% lidocaine strong?

  4% lidocaine cream is considered strong enough to provide effective numbing relief from genital herpes.

• Is LMX4 stronger than EMLA?

  LMX4 contains 4% lidocaine, whereas EMLA contains 5% total anaesthetic – 2.5% lidocaine and 2.5% prilocaine. So, while LMX4 is not considered stronger than EMLA, it tends to work faster, at around 30 minutes, compared to 60 minutes for EMLA.

• How long does it take 4% lidocaine to start working?

  Typically it takes around 2–15 minutes to have a numbing effect on genital herpes. It may take 30–60 minutes for the full effect.

  The numbing effect generally lasts a few hours.

• Where should you not apply lidocaine?

  Do not apply lidocaine cream to:

  • Broken, damaged or inflamed skin
  • The eyes, nose or mouth

• Are you supposed to rub in lidocaine cream?

  You should apply a thin layer to the sores rather than rubbing it in.

• Does lidocaine help heal or just numb?

  Lidocaine doesn’t help heal wounds or injuries. Lidocaine cream numbs the area it is applied to. It will make you feel more comfortable and provide relief, but it won’t speed up the healing of genital herpes sores.

• What happens if you put too much lidocaine on your skin?

  Using too much lidocaine cream may increase the risk of side effects, including:

  • More intense skin reactions
  • Increased absorption into the body

  Applying too much may lead to serious, potentially fatal toxicity. This is known as local anaesthetic systemic toxicity (LAST). Symptoms include:

  • Dizziness
  • Blurred vision
  • Tremors
  • Seizures
  • Slowed heart rates

  It often starts with a numb tongue or lips.

  If you suspect a lidocaine cream overdose, remove the product immediately, wash the area and seek medical attention.

• How often can I use 4% lidocaine cream?
