Telfast contains the active ingredient fexofenadine. It acts on the histamine receptors in the eyes, nose and throat, preventing the release of histamine and the subsequent inflammatory reaction that it causes. This leads to a reduction in symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, congestion and irritated eyes.

Telfast tablets provide quick and effective relief from the symptoms of allergic rhinitis. These symptoms include; sneezing, congestion, and a runny nose. Telfast has proven an effective treatment for pollen allergies (hay fever), as well as allergies to common household irritants, such as dust mites and pet dander. Its active ingredient is an antihistamine called fexofenadine hydrochloride.

Allergic rhinitis is a very common condition, affecting around 20% of people in The UK. The condition is caused by an overly sensitive immune system. When a harmless allergen, such as pollen, enters the nose, the immune system mistakenly reacts to it, believing it to be something more serious, such as an infection. To protect against this supposed infection, the body will start to produce more mucus, which will lead to nasal congestion and sneezing. Why certain people are more prone to allergies than others is still not completely understood. Though having a family history of the condition can make a person more susceptible. For some people, these symptoms are only experienced during the high pollen season. This form of rhinitis is known as hay fever, or seasonal rhinitis. For other allergy sufferers, where the symptoms are triggered by household irritants, such as dust mites and animal dander, the symptoms can be experienced all year round.

Histamine is a chemical released by the body in reaction to an allergen. It causes inflammation of the nasal passages, which will lead to the symptoms of allergic rhinitis. Telfast tablets are an antihistamine, which means it reduces the body's production of this chemical.

If additional allergy relief is needed, Telfast tablets can be taken alongside a nasal spray or eye drops. Fexofenadine is generally a non-drowsy antihistamine, but may cause drowsiness in some people. For this reason, it is advised to take care if driving or operating machinery whilst taking Telfast.

Alternative Treatments 

There are some non-medicinal methods to help combat hay fever symptoms. Some of these may include: 

  • Wear wrap-around sunglasses
  • Keep windows closed when it is a day with high pollen count. 
  • Try to have a shower after a day almost straight away. This will remove any trapped pollen grains from your hair and or skin. 

There is an extremely large range of OTC (over the counter) products you can purchase in any pharmacy, these vary from tablets to nasal sprays and also eye drops. You should try these before moving onto a prescription only medicine.

Telfast tablets should be taken once per day, ideally at a similar time each day. Swallow the tablet whole with a sip of water, before a meal.

Telfast is most effective if taken every day. If you miss a dose, do not double your next dose to compensate.

Not everyone will experience side effects when they take Telfast tablets. However, if you do, they can include:

Drowsiness, nausea, headache, dizziness

The active ingredient contained in Telfast tablets is:

Fexofenadine hydrochloride (120mg or 180mg)

Telfast tablets also contain the following inactive ingredients to make up the complete product:

Microcrystalline cellulose, pregelatinised maize starch, croscarmellose sodium, magnesium stearate, hypromellose, povidone K30, titanium dioxide (E171), colloidal anhydrous silica, macrogol 400, red iron oxide (E172), yellow iron oxide (E172).

Reading the following warnings carefully will help to ensure you are selecting an appropriate product.

Telfast will be unsuitable for you if:

  • You are allergic to fexofenadine or any of the tablets’ inactive ingredients
  • You are currently taking other antihistamine tablets
  • You are taking medicines to treat bacterial or fungal infections (e.g. erythromycin, ketoconazole)

Before using Telfast, talk to your GP or pharmacist if you:

  • Have a history of heart disease
  • Have kidney or liver problems
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Are elderly
  • Take indigestion medicines which contain aluminium and magnesium

Take care if consuming alcohol while using Telfast – it may increase your susceptibility to side effects.

Deliveries containing pharmacy-only or prescription medicines may require a signature on receipt. 

Delivery is free for all NHS prescriptions.

Please note: Royal Mail do not deliver on Sundays or Bank Holidays - this should be taken into account when ordering. 

If you are not home to accept your delivery, a card should be left by the Royal Mail representative. This card will provide details of where you can collect the order or how to arrange re-delivery.

Should you be unable to collect your missed delivery or arrange for your medication to be redelivered by Royal Mail, the pharmacy can resend your medication to the same, or a different address provided it has been returned to us and this happens within a 30 day window.

Once a package has been shipped with Royal Mail we advise that you are bound to the terms and conditions of their use together with the terms and conditions contained herein.

You have the right to cancel your order up to the point when your treatment is dispatched. The pharmacist must destroy any medication within 30 days of it being returned, even un-opened boxes, so we are not able to offer refunds once your treatment has been dispatched.
