About Ketoprofen Gel

Ketoprofen gel is an effective pain medication that is part of a class of medicines called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). It’s a prescription medicine that works to relieve mild to moderate pain. It’s often used to treat conditions like arthritis, sprains, and strains. It’s topical, which means you apply it directly to the affected area, and its gel formula ensures it’s easily absorbed into your skin.

How Does Ketoprofen Gel Work?

NSAIDs work by stopping your body making the chemicals that cause inflammation. This also helps you to manage pain. Because you apply ketoprofen gel directly to the specific area of your body that needs it, it only treats that area. This is unlike oral NSAIDs that affect your entire body. Since ketoprofen gel is targeted, it minimises the side effects you might get from systemic (whole body) pain relief.

How To Take Ketoprofen Gel

Only ever apply ketoprofen gel to the surface of normal, unbroken skin, and never cover the treated area with dressings or bandages. Before using it, carefully and thoroughly wash and dry the area you want to apply the gel to. Wash your hands and then measure out a pea-sized amount of gel for each area. Apply to your skin and massage until the gel is absorbed.

Wash your hands again after application to avoid getting the gel in unwanted places. If you’ve applied the gel to your hands, skip this step. Always avoid getting the gel in your mouth or eyes. If you do get ketoprofen gel in your mouth or eyes, rinse with plenty of water.

Apply the gel between 2 - 4 times a day, but no more.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in ketoprofen gel is ketoprofen, and the gel contains 25 mg in every 1g. The inactive ingredients in the gel are carbomer, triethanolamine, lavender essential oil, ethanol and purified water. These work together to make the gel effective.

Side Effects

Like all medicines, ketoprofen gel can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Some of the possible side effects you may experience include skin irritation, redness, itching, or a rash at the application site. These are more likely if you use too much ketoprofen gel.

If you have asthma, symptoms like wheezing or breathlessness can be made worse by ketoprofen gel. Discuss your asthma with our clinical team to make sure that this treatment is right for you.

Warnings

You shouldn’t take ketoprofen gel if you’re allergic to any of its ingredients. If you’re pregnant, planning on becoming pregnant, or breastfeeding, make sure you discuss this during your consultation so your prescriber can determine if it’s suitable for you.

Ketoprofen gel may interact with other medications, including blood thinners and other NSAIDs, so always tell your prescriber of any medications (prescription or over the counter) that you take.

Some people with skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis may find that ketoprofen gel isn’t suitable for them. This is because you must apply it to unbroken skin.

Ketoprofen gel can cause your skin to become more sensitive to sunlight than normal, and this can continue for up to two weeks after you stop using it. You should take additional steps to protect your skin and don’t use sunbeds during, or for two weeks after, your treatment.
