Estradiol 10mcg Vaginal Tablet Information
What Are Estradiol 10mcg Pessaries?
Estradiol vaginal pessaries are a type of local hormone replacement therapy (HRT). They are tablets that you insert deep into your vagina to treat vaginal dryness, soreness and irritation caused by low oestrogen levels after menopause. They gently release oestrogen directly where it’s needed.
Who Can Use Estradiol Pessaries?
You can use the pessaries if you have gone through the menopause and are experiencing symptoms known in medical terms as vaginal atrophy. These include menopausal symptoms in the vagina, such as dryness or irritation. HRT carries risks, which your prescriber will consider when deciding if estradiol vaginal pessaries are right for you.
How Do Estradiol Vaginal Pessaries Work?
Estradiol vaginal pessaries work by replacing the oestrogen that your body no longer makes. Oestrogen is normally produced in your ovaries, but after you go through menopause, they stop making it. You insert estradiol pessaries directly into your vagina, so they can get to work exactly where they’re needed. Because they’re a local treatment, they are less likely to cause side effects than systemic (whole body) hormonal treatments.
Alternatives to Estradiol Vaginal Pessaries
Alternatives to estradiol pessaries include other hormone-based treatments like creams, rings or gels. You could also use non-hormonal moisturisers and lubricants, although these won’t treat the underlying cause of your symptoms. If your symptoms affect parts of your body other than your vagina, your prescriber may suggest oral or patch-based HRT.
How To Use Estradiol Vaginal Pessaries
Insert one pessary high into your vagina using the applicator. Use one a day for the first two weeks. After that, reduce to twice a week, leaving three or four days between each dose. Clean the applicator after every use and follow your prescriber’s instructions.
Applicator Use And Cleaning
Follow the directions included in your product information leaflet for how to use the applicator. Clean the applicator after every use:
- Remove the plunger from the applicator.
- Clean both parts (tube and plunger) with mild soap, then rinse all surfaces with warm tap water for 5 seconds.
- Air dry both parts on a clean surface, such as a paper towel.
Use the same applicator until you’ve finished the treatment pack, at which point you can dispose of it.
Storage
Always keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children. The expiry date is on the carton and refers to the last day of the month. Never use it after that date. If you have leftover medication, speak to your prescriber for the best way to dispose of it.

Estradiol 10mcg Vaginal Tablets FAQs
What Are Estradiol 10mcg Vaginal Pessaries Used For?
Estradiol 10mcg vaginal pessaries are used to treat symptoms of vaginal atrophy that occur during menopause, such as dryness or irritation, which happen when your oestrogen levels naturally drop. Estradiol is a type of medication used in vaginal hormone replacement therapy.
Do I Need A Prescription For Vaginal Estradiol Pessaries?
Yes, vaginal estradiol pessaries are a prescription-only medicine. This means you’ll need to complete a short consultation and have the answers reviewed by a licensed UK-based prescriber. If they agree that estradiol pessaries are the most suitable treatment for you, they’ll issue a prescription. If appropriate, we can supply estradiol from our UK-based pharmacy.
How Quickly Do Estradiol Pessaries Work?
Most people find their vaginal symptoms gradually improve with regular use over the first few weeks. Talk to your prescriber if your symptoms haven’t improved after a few months.
How Do I Use The Applicator Correctly?
Always follow the user instructions in your product information leaflet, which tell you to:
- Pull the plunger until it stops.
- Place the pessary in the holder.
- Gently insert the applicator until you feel slight resistance (8–10cm).
- Slowly press the plunger push button to release the pessary.
- Clean and let the applicator dry after each use.
Can I Use Estradiol Pessaries Long Term?
Your prescriber will recommend using the lowest effective dose for the shortest time possible to manage your symptoms. They’ll usually schedule annual check-ups to ensure that estradiol remains an appropriate treatment for you and that the benefits outweigh any risks.
Who Should Avoid Estradiol Pessaries?
You shouldn’t use estradiol if you are allergic to any of the ingredients, or if you have or have ever had:
- Breast cancer
- Oestrogen-sensitive cancer
- Blood clots in your veins
- Blood clotting disorder
- Liver disease
- Heart attack
- Stroke
- Angina
- Thickening of the womb lining
- Unexplained vaginal bleeding
Your prescriber will review your medical history during the consultation to ensure estradiol is safe for you to use.
Can I Use Vaginal Estradiol With Other Medicines?
This depends on other medicines. As the pessary works locally in your vagina, it is unlikely to interact with other medications you may take orally. It could, however, affect other vaginal treatments, so it’s important to discuss any other medicines or treatments you use with your prescriber. They can ensure it’s safe for you to use estradiol pessaries at the same time.
What Side Effects Should I Look Out For?
Most side effects of estradiol are mild, but some people may experience more severe ones. Signs to look out for include:
- Migraine-like headaches happening for the first time
- Yellowing of your skin or the whites of your eyes (jaundice)
- Significant rise in blood pressure
- Signs of a blood clot, such as painful swelling and redness of the legs, Sudden chest pain or difficulty breathing
If you experience any of the above symptoms, discontinue use of Estradiol and seek medical attention immediately.
Can I Use Vaginal Estradiol If I’ve Had Breast Cancer?
It’s unclear if estradiol is safe for people who have had breast cancer. If this applies to you, only use vaginal oestrogen on specialist advice; your prescriber may recommend an alternative.
Is Vaginal Estradiol A Contraceptive?
No, estradiol isn’t a contraceptive, so it won’t prevent pregnancy. If you’re under the age of 50 or it’s been less than 12 months since your last menstrual period, you should use contraception to avoid getting pregnant. Speak to your prescriber for advice.
Estradiol pessaries may be available following a short online consultation with our UK-registered prescribers.
